help-husband wants to buy used resmed S9 autoset

My husband has used a CPAP machine for years and it simply does not work like it used to. He also has a much older auto pap machine that he sometimes uses, but neither one have recently given him a great nights sleep. He had a sleep study done recently and he did not sleep that long to truly get great data. They said his setting should be around 9. Sometimes it works more often it does not. He does not get quality sleep and has not for many years. He is so sleep deprived so that most days he can not function so we are hoping that the purchase of an S9 autoset will be the answer to his problems.

My husband has negotiated a deal for $350 for a lightly used res med S9 autoset machine. Before completing this transaction he would like to know if there is a way to find out when the machine was manufactured and also anyway to clearly tell how many hours the machine was used. He also was wondering if it is an S9 that is two years old, is there anyway to update the algorithm/firmware/software so that it works effectively as a new one?

By the way, the guy selling the machine found out he had narcolepsy, not sleep apnea and that is why he is selling it. We do not have insurance and can not afford to buy a new one, that is why he is purchasing a used one.

Used S9 AutoSet for $350 is a good price but make sure it say AutoSet next to stop/start button and got all the accessories humidifier, water tank, slimline & climate line hoses, power brick and carry case is preferable. Supplier #2 sell the same package for $625 for a cleaned gently used S9 AutoSet with low hours and some warranty. You don,t want a device comes from smokey environment and hours used is more important than anything else, date and updates not essentials as nothing major added and look at the info and video to know how to check the hours

That sounds like a good deal. I just bought a new s9autoset for $750. From craigslist. Yes tjere is a way to see the used hours on it. I think that question has been answered. If not. Message me and ill tell you how to do it.

horriblesleeper, until recently I thought the answer to bad sleep was to strap on the mask, turn on the machine and use it 100% of sleep time. But APAP will not necessarily cure bad sleep and without good quality sleep you will not feel refreshed. I think OSA and bad sleep sometimes should be treated as separate entities. He might want to work on the sleep problem as well as getting a new machine. I suggest a review of sleep hygiene- sometimes the small things will derail you when it comes to sleep. Since you don't have insurance he may need to explore getting better sleep on his own rather than with the help of a specialist. I know this really wasn't your question, but someone else did answer that so I thought I'd address the quality sleep angle. A new machine with the correct settings may help but if he doesn't start feeling bertter within a couple of months please consider what I said. Learning how to get good, refreshing, quality sleep is a lot of effort, but well worth it in the end. Good luck. Sounds like an excellent deal by the way. Keep us posted please.

Thank you to all that replied to my original post. Just wanted to let you know that the deal was too good to be true........ The machine was an S9 elite, which my husband already has. He purchased it 2 weeks ago via Craigslist, thinking it was the S9 autoset. Unfortunately a costly error that he is beating himself about it. So, Zonk mentioned Supplier #2 had S9 autosets that were gently used for $625.00. My question is who is Supplier #2 or where can I find more information about them?

We are desperate; any info will be greatly appreciated.

They are a great place and many people have gotten stuff from them. I'm saving up to get an autoset myself.

It is possible they would take the elite in trade or as part of the payment. Can't hurt to ask!

Mistakes like this are common for those of us who know what it's like to be sleep deprived. Sometimes poor sleep can be caused by something simple like too much caffeine from drinking iced tea all day long.

Avoid caffeine, get exercise at least 5 days a week, and try generic benadryl as a sleep aid. These are all cost effective and simple measures, but they may make a big difference.

Thanks to all of you who helped us. My husband purchased a used S9 AutoSet machine today. He got it from someone on Craigslist for $350. It has only 77 hours on it but no ClimateLine. He is super happy and can't wait to see if it helps him.

Horriblesleeper--don't be terribly surprised if your hubby's new AutoSet shows that he needs a pressure that's different from the 9cm results of his recent sleep study to get good AHI numbers. At least that's what happened to me. I got an AutoSet following a recent sleep study that showed a pressure in the range of 4-5 cm. higher than what the sleep study said would bring my AHI down to zero. Why? The pulmonologist doesn't know, but I now know it can happen. Congrats on you husband finding an AutoSet at a good price!
