how to tell if machine is " new "

My dr/DME looked panicked and furious that I would return my rental (it was less than 30 days, come on now!).  I got the impression that he didn't know what to do with it... which made me think 1) will they pass it off as new to someone else?, and 2) not many of their rentals must get returned.

Not sure about how things work in other countries compared to Australia.. and no doubt there are differences in the service given by different companies/suppliers.

The company that provided my machine for my home trial after my sleep study gave me a "rental unit" for a month at a reduced fee while my specialist assessed how well the machine was treating my apnoea, and also allowed me to try different masks (the mask frames where rentals as well, but the cushions/pillows where brand new out of sealed packs).

Once it was decided that the machine was working for me with settings deduced from variations over the month, my specialist said he would sign off on me getting my commercial driving status reinstated conditional to ongoing CPAP use and compliance to certain hours and AHI numbers.

I then decided to purchase a brand new machine identical to my rental/test unit from the same clinic/company.
The clinic I dealt with then took my rental unit back (after extending the loan period for two extra weeks at no cost due to a health problem I had that meant the data I needed hadn't been compiled at the end of the month's trial), they then provided me with a brand new Dreamstation in an unopened box.

When I returned the rental unit and picked up my new unit they also set it up with all the identical settings that I'd been on, and I got a complete brand new F&P Eson mask the same as the loan mask I'd had.

The clinic also downloads my data to give reports to my specialist as required for free as well.

From what I saw the clinic I dealt with actually just uses the machines as true rental units, available to people who need a unit to do CPAP trials or ongoing personal hire, then if you purchase a new machine they give you a genuine brand new one boxed from the factory.

I preferred the carry bag that the previous model came with, rather than the one that comes with the new model Dreamstation, so they even swapped the carry bag over from one they still had in stock for me without a problem.

5 customer service.  Cool

Sounds like some suppliers and clinics elsewhere could take a lesson from where I went.  Dodgy

All I said before is true. I called 8 local medical equipment suppliers and was initially lied to by all of them about me order would be brand new.  When I pressed management for confirmation, they either hung up on me or said there was no guarantee I would receive a new machine. I even went back to my doctor to add the words new equipment, not just new setup.

The insurance companies do not care. I believe the MES gets paid the same no matter what they send out. I don't know or care what they do with the used machines, but there should be full disclosure.

I hear what you say about a hour meter but yesterday the resumed help call center assured me there was no hour meter when asked about the resumed 10.

Can you please confirm again about the hour meter. I think I found a internet site I can trust.

One other thing, off topic.
I just found out I have atrial fibrillation.  My current s9 machine was set for 5 now up to 9.

Last study said I had 141 apnea.

New settings are CPAP Therpy @ 10cm/H2O
AirSense 10 Autoset(E0601) , EasyBreathe: On and Humidifier:3

Looks simple enough to set up. But is there more to the Easy Breathe setting than that?

Thanks!

The "hour meter" is the menu item for Run Hours. On the Airsense 10, just press the My Options menu, and scroll down to ABOUT, press the control knob and read Run Hours.  You don't even need to be in the clinical menu.

On my Airsense 10 the About Menu was not originally present.
I had to use the Clinical Menu to change ESSENTIALS from on to Plus then I had the About Menu available to me.

It really sucks that so many places are happy to rip us all off with things we need for medical treatment, and that the insurance companies don't care what you end up with (they just keep putting the premiums up each year, so they are not the ones actually paying for, or receiving dodgy equipment)

My Dreamstation CPAP was paid for out of my own pocket, not by an insurance company or medical cover, $2,000 Au was the retail price for it.

I was more fortunate than many here are in that I stumbled across a good clinic, and I get on really well with the tech person I deal with (so much so that I think she and her husband are going to name their first child after me when it is born in a few weeks  Laugh-a-lot )

The service I have had, and the discounts I was given during the trial period and with the purchase of my own personal CPAP, are above what is "normal" even for here in Australia.

We get ripped off here by not being able to purchase things at competitive prices that are available to other countries, such as in the USA (don't get me started on the cost of motorcycles and parts..  Sad  ), so it is great to find a place that sees me as a customer.. not just a walking wallet to be emptied.

Hopefully you will get a good outcome in the end once they see you are actually an informed customer who won't tolerate being conned and bullsh**ted to.

The Apnea Board is a great place for finding good info on the "how to" of things you need to know.  Cool

Thanks to everyone for the feedback.

Ordered the machine today and new mask, Airfit F20. So far have hated any mask used previously. Fingers crossed. It always seems half way through the night either my face or the mask changes.

I saw the good link here on fitting a mask. Don't know if it will help this problem though.
