metformin

For those with type 2 diabetes and not using insulin and using metformin, what can you tell me about this medication? Side effects, can it drop your glucose too low and things like that.

Hypoglycemia is very rare with Metformin.
The most common complaints are G.I.
Some people refer to it as "Met-fartin"

I thought that when I went on insulin my dosage of metformin would go down - WRONG assumption! Not sure I've ever noticed any side effects of this drug. It's hard to single out the effects, when you get prescribed several other drugs at the same time.

I didn't know that people were prescribed metformin and insulin. That is scary

I was originally prescribed Metformin for Diabetes type 2 and after several visits to my gastroenterologist to find out why I was continually getting the "trots" [loose bowels] he soon ascertained it was the cause, now on Diamicron and no more "trots".

Metformin did not level out my blood sugar enough. I continued to get the extreme drops. My highs got lower but the lows, wow. I was on Actos for a long time, which leveled me out nicely. I just switched to Victoza. The better my drops got, the higher my A1c got.

Hey, Paula, didn't I just see/hear something about a lawsuit involving Actos? My best friend was on that for a while and the doc yanked him off of it for some reason that I can't remember.

metformin doesn't increase insulin production, it increases sensitivity to the insulin in people who have decreased sensitivity. It's main side effect is to cause (usually) slight nausea, and sometimes initial weight loss. both those tend to go away after the first month. It does not tend to cause any great drops in blood sugar, but does help reduce highs in the majority of diabetics who suffer insulin resistance as either a primary or secondary characteristic of DM - as long as you are getting insulin either naturally or supplementally.

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
  • Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
  • let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
  • gently suck to form a light vacuum
Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

Actos is highly suspected to cause bladder cancer. It has been around for years, however. My thinking is they want to get rid of the old stand by to get the more expensive newbies selling more.

There is one medication that combines actos and metformin. It really helped my brother. It brought his A1c to a better number than ever.
