CPAP Machine Choices - CPAP for central apnea?

BRAND NEW Resmed Aircurve 10 VAUTO Auto BiPAP / CPAP - $675

If I understand this should work for my mixed apnea. Right?

I believe that seller is the same one I referred to previously that sells the Airsense 10 Autoset for $495. If you really think an ASV is in your future, ask him for a quote. I suspect that it is going to be in the $2000 to $2100 range, but I have not asked him.  It's a distributor,so has access to all types of machines at wholesale prices. Considering the cost, I would start with an Autoset. As I said before, you will be able to resell it for nearly what you paid if your cost is $500 or less.

I understand that sleeping on your side should help with obstructive apneas any data on central apneas?

I could sleep with a backpack on until I got used to it.

If I bought a pulse oximeter would it be able to tell me if I was successful. I know that it would not help differentiate apnea types but if my oxygen never drops do I care why?

BTW I also looked into making my own Arduino based data logger to record breathing from an cannula and chest strap. Does anyone know of DIY plans for such?

Why would you do any of this. Get a reasonably priced Auto CPAP and see if that works. Anticipate success. If for any reason you are not adequately treated on CPAP, then you can consider an oximeter.  The Autoset will produce data that makes a data logger and cannula moot.  Don't over-think this.

Back to Craigslist.

Take a breath and don't rush to spend your money. It really isn't a good idea to just buy an ASV, without medical support. It is highly recommended that an echocardiogram is performed to make sure the ejection factor is over 45%. Sudden death has stopped this machine being prescribed to those under this amount and other machines are used.

For auto-cpap, from machine data or software. You can set the min pressure 1 or 2cm below 95%. Or clinicians commonly use the maximum or 95% pressure for fixed pressure CPAP, this can also be used for min pressure.

Without wishing to hijack the thread, I do wish you'd stop saying this. The study referred to deaths from all causes, whether or not relating to heart failure, and with no indication that they were "sudden deaths". What you say is misleading and wrong. The fact is the researchers don't know why there was an elevated death rate (and please don't refer me again to a cherry-picked except from that seminar video).

I have seen one paper which indicates there is a small improvement in central apnea by sleeping on the side. Unfortunately I can't lay my hands on it at the moment, but I remember not being extremely impressed by the findings (small sample, weak statistical signal). My take-away lesson was that (other things being equal) side sleeping won't make your central apnea worse and might possibly improve it a little bit.

Thanks for all the advice. Not jumping to buy anything real expensive. Plan at this point is,

1. Schedule an overnight study,
2. Buy a reasonably priced CPAP, as long as it works with sleepyhead and can distinguish between central and obstructive apneas,
3. Maybe buy a pulse oximeter, because I like data,
4. Start adjusting settings, with help from this board,
5. Experiment with sleeping positions,
6. Talk to my doc about doing CPAP and ASV titrations during the study.
7. If things work out I cancel the study.

Thanks

Cherry picked? these are the expert people in the field who reported on their SERVE-HF study, to their fellow specialists on the latest finding in 2017, Have been the ones I've posted. The video symposiums referenced several studies including the main current one. I think you will find that is the exact term they use is 'sudden cardiac death'

resmed use these videos on their youtube channel to educate people

ajack, you are way off topic and it just gets old that everytime ASV comes up you have to take us back to your alarming interpretation of the studies and videos.

An alternative viewpoint: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4990958/
Quote:The updated recommendation is based exclusively on the SERVE-HF study,2 which reported increased cardiovascular and mortality risk in CHF patients with LVEF ≤ 45%. However, that study found no difference in primary endpoint or cardiovascular mortality among those with LVEF ≥ 30%, and that ASV lowered risk in patients with LVEF ≤ 45% and Cheyne Stokes respiration (CSR) < 20% of recording time.
