[split] Rose3130 Doctor Cancelled BPAP

[split] Rose3130 Doctor Cancelled BPAP
Hi,
I have not been on here for over 2 years.  I was on Bipap for over 8 years, and then because of a mix up with Medicare, I was told I needed another sleep study to justify have a bipap.

I had 1 home study where my sat went to 85%, and 2 lab studies done in the winter/spring of 2018.  Found it hard to sleep for the lab studies, slept less than 5 hours for both.  The results came back that I had a lot of hypopnea, but only had 1 apnea episode per hour.  My lowest sat was 88%.  ( My lowest sat on my original study was 75%)

When I went to my pulmonary doc's office for the results, he tells me I don't need a Bipap anymore.   I told him, give me a Rx and I'll pay for one out of pocket.  He said no.  Said I didn't need it.  Said that what little sleep issues I had would not effect my health in the long run.

I was wondering how you bought a cpap machine without a prescription?  (I'm assuming you bought one without a Rx) I thought a person had to have a Rx to purchase one online.  When I looked on some of the sites after being taken off Bipap, all of them said to include a Rx from the physician.

Any info would be appreciated.  I was on an ResMed Air 10.

Thank you, Rose

RE: Negative sleep study, still ordered a CPAP
Rose, a lot of machines are available on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist.  I saw a Resmed Aircurve 10 Vauto on FB for $600 that was unused. The family bought it for their mom, but she died before being able to use it. It's really easy to buy. Your doctor is an idiot. Fire him.

I'm wondering what miracle cure Dr. Duck used to cancel medical necessity for the BPAP. I too vote for firing the quack.

I did....I have not gone back to him.

I'll start looking on the suggested sites for a unit.  Do you know if there's any problem getting the accessories for the units as well...tubing, masks, etc?  Or do you have to look for them also on sites like Craiglist or other areas?

Thank you!!
Rose

Dave,
He said I didn't have enough apnea episodes to qualify for Medicare to cover it.  He said I had to have at least 5 episodes per hour, and I was having 1, or maybe 2/hr.  On one hour of the study I had 21 episodes of hypopnea.

Won't go back to him, ever, if I should need a pulmonary doc.

All hoses and masks (except some travel models) are interchangeable, all of them work on other Cpap so and “bpap” machines. I would also look at Supplier #2 (on the ribbon at the top of the site under suppliers). Their used machines are low hours and with a warranty of one year. About 1/2 or LESS than new. That is where I got mine (used), great price and a great supplier.

Rose, there are very good prices on equipment and parts on Amazon and Ebay as well as many of the vendors in the Supplier List. If you have the original prescription for your BPAP, you can always use that, and I'm unclear if you may have a prescription for CPAP from Dr. Duck. My advise in these cases is that you not use a specialist, but instead ask your primary doctor to manage your care and prescriptions. It appears the specialist got you booted out of coverage from Medicare, but that does not invalidate the effect of any prescription from your main doctor. Clearly, you can get a second opinion, and you should obtain a full copy of the sleep study for your records. If you post a copy of that with private information redacted (blacked out) we can offer suggestion of what that test shows, and whether it leaves the door open for a second opinion. Be sure to get a copy of that report!

RE: [split] Rose3130 Doctor Cancelled BPAP
Remember that a Rx for CPAP can be written by a MD, DO, Psychiatrist, Physicians Assistant, Nurse Practitioner, Dentist, or a Naturopathic Physician. It doesn't have to be written by a specialist. I had my primary doctor write mine. My wife's Rx was originally written by a sleep specialist but we dropped him and any further ones are written by her primary doctor. There is at least one of the online CPAP suppliers that offers a online consultation over the phone with someone who can write the Rx.

Thank you Dave.  Sorry I haven't been on here to answer you.  I will check with Supplier#2 as you suggested!

Stacey, thank you for the reply.  Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

Can I buy the hoses, filters, masks, etc. without a Rx?   I understand the hoses are interchangeable, but I am unsure how to go about getting the supplies.

Thank you for any information.  I will check with Supplier#2 as you and Dave suggested!

Masks and the xPAP are type 2 medical devices and require a prescription, though you can buy all the mask parts and assemble them yourself without a prescription.
