RE: visiting usa short tem rental - resmed S9
Thanks everybody. Some issues arise from the suggestions. Her visits to the US are frequent & repeated. We know the machine is cheaper in the US but we would build up a stock back here in Oz by buying in the US on every visit. Resmed have a questionable system where they won't support a machine in Oz, that has been purchased overseas by an Oz resident! Rather ordinary policy, particularly as they are an Oz company.

The main concern she has is with customs/security & limited baggage allowances, so rental in US is the absolute best solution. She has determined that an Oz prescription will be acceptable in the US.

Several members have mentioned "DME" in their responses. Could someone explain what "DME" means to a foreigner!

Based on the responses to date, buying a second machine & leaving it in Atlanta looks like the only realistic solution.

Thanks for all the responses.

DME is Durable Medical Equipment and some call the place where they rent/buy CPAP and/or other medical supplies from DME. An RT is who actually fits the masks for apnea therapy as well as other duties.

Glad you found a solution that will work for you. Happy and safe travels for your wife. You might be able to get a great deal from the suppliers listed in this forum.

Yes, rather than say DME supplier, we just say DME. Lazy we are, yes.

Other acronyms/abbreviations: http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.php?title=Acronyms

If you have any from the Land of Oz to add, let me know!

Also, please let us know how this works out for her. We can use it to help others in the future.

And ttexan, thanks for telling us that! Good to know!

Do you have friends or family here in the US who can keep the CPAP machine if you buy one?

You might buy one online and have it delivered to them. Or come here to the US with a rental or carrying your own for one trip, then try to find one through craigslist.

Get the free SleepyHead software here.
Useful links.
Click here for information on the main alternative to CPAP.
If it's midnight and a DME tells you it's dark outside, go and check it yourself.
