weight gain
Has anyone else GAINED weight after starting cpap?
I was expecting the opposite.
I have gained 12lbs in 4 1/2 months.
I gave up alcohol but the weight just keeps coming.
For last 3 weeks I tried Low carb, eating under 20 carbs a day. I lost 3 lbs (probably water). Normally I should have lost 8-10 lbs at that carb level.
I guess it's not unusual, found this link

RE: weight gain
I haven't gained weight but have just as hard of a time losing it, which has been disappointing because I was kind of hoping poor sleep was the main reason for my snail's pace metabolism. I was inspired by many people talking about all this weight loss and other health improvements simply from starting CPAP therapy, but mostly I've found all the same health problems are still there, I just feel a bit more rested during the day.
I suspect the exponential increase in the difficulty of losing weight is related mostly to my age now. I used to go low-carb or cut calories to 1200 and lose 20 lbs in a couple of weeks - now it's more like 7-8 in a month, if I'm lucky. :-/
RE: weight gain
I too find it hard to lose weight. As someone here posted a few months ago here on the same topic, after cpap therapy initiated - food looks better, smells better, and tastes better.

RE: weight gain
i gained weight after starting cpap, but it was water weight there are some interesting thoughts around water retention escalation and cpap, with the bottom line being bipap. I am considering a move to bipap; currently have EPR at 3.

Tongue Suck Technique for prevention of mouth breathing:
- Place your tongue behind your front teeth on the roof of your mouth
- let your tongue fill the space between the upper molars
- gently suck to form a light vacuum
Practising during the day can help you to keep it at night

RE: weight gain
I gained 20 lb and have lost about 7 of it. I believe the new lease on life from CPAP therapy changed my attitude towards food.

RE: weight gain
Yep, food tastes better when you are awake and everything is running. Since I started CPAP I also found this was true especially for breakfast.

RE: weight gain
I thought it was just me. I quit smoking around the time I started with CPAP so now a few months in I find that everything tastes better. And I'm pretty much always hungry, I've put on at least 10 pounds maybe a little more.
RE: weight gain
Unless you have edema, you'll probably find that even though you went low carb, you increased your calories. It doesn't help that as you get older, you actually need fewer calories daily. Darn it.

I try to focus on health rather than that number on the scale. Am I eating my fruits and vegis, some fish every week, whole grains, not too little, not too much, watching the sugar, and moving a little? All that makes me feel good without letting the scale bully me.

BRIEF SUMMARY
Current Knowledge/Study Rationale: Obese OSA patients commonly believe that treatment with CPAP will facilitate weight loss. However, empirical observations and uncontrolled studies suggest otherwise. Data from randomized controlled studies are lacking.
Study Impact: In this 6 month randomized controlled trial, treatment with CPAP resulted in weight gain, not weight loss. Therefore, in addition to treatment with CPAP, obese OSA patients should engage in other behaviors such as increased physical activity and reduction in caloric intake to lose weight.
