why am I so groggy?
Hi all and Merry Christmas! I finally have my therapy under control. Leaks great, ahi under 3 mostly, big time dreaming. I have never been a "popper" (pop out of bed, brain ready to go), but sure would like to feel more "with it" in the morning. Any ideas? Thanks

The other pieces of the puzzle are diet, exercise, and stress. For diet, go easy on the simple carbs and fats, reduce the amount of caffeine you're getting, and be moderate with the alcohol. Eat something with some complex carbs and lean protein when you get up. Coffee and a bagel/donut will make you crash after the blood sugar spike. Do something for 30 minutes every day for exercise even if it's a stroll around the neighborhood or a few laps around the office building. Only you can figure out how to reduce any stress you have. You've addressed the sleep part but you may not be addressing the other parts.

If it persists, you should check Vitamin D, 25-Hydroxy, Thyroid levels, and a CBC to make sure some of the common causes of fatigue are ruled out (or ruled in and treated....)

I'm kind of in the same boat as you right now, and I believe the other two posters are right.

My theory is that, as our condition has gone undiagnosed for some time, our fatigue has increase (probably over years) and to compensate, our bodies probably crave the caffeine, sugar and simple carbs for quick energy, and we've possible stopped eating as much as the healthy stuff as we should. Also, and the fatigue increases, our desire and energy to do anything active decreases so perhaps we aren't as active as we were before. (Not to say we are sedentary or anything, but even a short 15 minutes walk/jog etc. does wonders for energy).

Anyways, I feel that since over the years I personally am aware that I consume more carbs, sugar and caffeine, and my daily exercise has decreased with my lack of energy, that it will take a little while to get these aspects of my life back in check along with my sleep. Getting restful sleep is step 1, correcting the other aspects is step 2. Tongue

I hope this helps Big Grin

RE: why am I so groggy?
amie has a point. a related point is that we have been "starving" for sleep and like a child that has been raised with inadequate food craves food to an unhealthy extent and gets heavy when food becomes plentiful, some of us (this is me... ) just want to sleep sleep sleep! In my case, I have had apnea all my life, even though I didn't know it.

A compounding factor is that your body *heals* things during sleep. It re-patterns brain, stores to longterm memory things you experienced during the day, categorizing like things so that you can retrieve .... sleep is important and has a vital function in your health. You are likely suffering brain and body deficits due to lack of sleep, and while you don't have a sleep bank, per se, you may have a need for healing and re-wiring that causes you to legitimately need more for a while (kind of like a teenager does to deal with all the hormone and wiring changes...) Takes a while for your body to heal itself. Other things as mentioned can cause a bit of slowness in the AM also.

And honestly even in folks without SA some folks just arent "morning people".

Cpap machine gets you back to normal as in without SA for you. If you werent born a "morning person" the machine probably isnt going to turn you into one. LOL

What do you recommend?

Another thought is you may be (now) sleeping too long. We are creatures of habit, due to poor rest, you needed more sleep to achieve enough rest, perhaps now, you might simply be sleeping too long?
