Icon Identification

Icon Identification and Other Similar Things

Icons are those little images scattered about the forum. Some provide information ("there are no new messages"). Some have a function ("click to clear all new messages"). Some are just icons to assist with the accompanying text (smilies).

Identifying an icon's purpose is easy. Just hover your mouse over it and it will say what it does. Easy, right? But, if you are like me, you don't realize some of what you see is actually there for a reason!

Some of the information ones are explained in legends at the bottom of various pages. Like this one found at the bottom of a forum section (such as "Main Apnea Board Forum"):

These are used in the far left hand column of that page.

Note: the icons in the second column are the ones the thread's creator chose to convey a meaning.

Some have both information as well as function. This is the legend at the bottom of the main forum page:

The 'Forum Contains New Posts' icon's function is also how you mark a forum read without going into it and is found next to the forum section's name:

This is a good way to clear it from the 'Off-Topic Forum' if you never go there.

***Icons found within a thread:

At the bottom of each post you'll see some more buttons/icons. Again, if you hover over them, it will tell you it's information or function. Some users will not have all of these since it is a personal choice as to what to show to others. These are set in the User CP which is covered elsewhere.

The email button will not give you that users email address. Instead, your email is sent to the forum's software which then sends it on to the other user. BUT when that user gets your email, they will have yours.

The PM button allows you to send that user a personal message (PMs are discussed elsewhere).

The WWW button is a link to the user's website.

The Find button will take you to a list of every post that user has made. It can be quite long! (at this moment, SuperSleeper has 27 pages worth!)

You can see a little number in the right hand corner of all posts. That's the direct link to that post. This is good to use when you want to share specific information in another thread.

At the bottom of a thread's page, are some icons with text links.

The 'printable version' is good for if you want to print out someone's directions for later.

The 'send to a friend' is self-explanatory. BUT, make sure the link you send is viewable by them. If the text link below that legend contains 'Public Area', then non-members can view it.

'Subscribe to this thread' (subscriptions are discussed elsewhere) is one of the ways you to get notifications of new posts to that thread.
