I'm a lifetime OSA sufferer, diagnosed as an adult, been on cpap for almost 15 years now. My machine is a self adjusting Resmed
I recently remarried. My husband is 27, normally fit and well, but has always slept for long periods and on waking takes at least 30 minutes to feel 'normal'. Some mornings the covers are drenched in sweat from him just as they used to be with me.
Today I could hardly wake him up. He's a mouth breather. I changed my nasal pillows for one of my old full face mask and asked him to try sleeping with it.
The machine settles at 4.0, and I've just been up to check on him (after sleeping for about an hour) and he's sleeping peacefully with the machine running at 8.7.
If he didn't have apnea would the increase in pressure happen? I'm considering asking for him to go for sleep study.

Forgot to say, he had already slept for 10 hours before I gave him the cpap, now he's another couple of hours sleeping with it

He may or may not have apnea. That's for a doctor and possibly a sleep study to find out. Best bet is to have him see his doctor to discuss it.

G'day Jane, welcome to Apnea Board. The fact that the machine is running at 8.7 would indicate to me that it's treating something and it's likely he has apnea. Does he have the other signs such as snoring, gasping and snorting etc? In any event, I'd say there is sufficient concern there to get him checked out.
By the way, which model Resmed is it? (The name will be printed on the front, usually by the power button. Might be Autoset or something like that).

The auto cpap machines respond to snores and flow limitations as apnea precursors to increase pressure to prevent the obstructive apnea (OA). That the machine increased pressure, suggests those factors are present. You say you have a Resmed Autoset. Is that the S9 model? If so, it will have a SD data card that can provide more detailed therapy data and actually detect apneas and hypopneas. It might be more revealing to see that data on the time your husband uses the machine.

His doctor should order up an overnight oximetry test to see if his O2 levels are tanking. If they are, it would provide further evidence that he may have apnea. Doctor would refer him to a sleep study. Either home or at a center.

Agree with other posters that the APAP could be responding to either flow limitations or snores. These events sometimes precede an obstructive apnea. I am curious as to how he feels when he wakes after having used the machine. I suggest he see a sleep specialist and get tested.
As far as your own therapy, you should download sleepyhead software so you can track your results as well as his. Good luck and welcome to Apnea Board!
