CPAP shuts off during treatment - John David - 01-07-2016

I have just started using ResMed S9 with an attached H5i humidifier. Start up is good, everything is comfortable. About an hour into the treatment, and roughly at each hour following, the machine stops working. I wake up with a very parched throat. When I check the machine the Humidity Screen is displayed and is orange. I push the "Push Dial" to reset, the humidity screen turns blue and treatment resumes. Almost immediately my parched throat is relieved. This repeats every hour or so through the night and becomes more frequent near morning. Settings are Climate Control at 30 degrees C. I'm using a Climate Line air tube. Any one know why this machine stops working through the treatments?

Note: The blower does not stop working, just the humidifier.

Hi JD
When I got my S9 they did not give me a humidifier and the dry mouth was terrible, since being given a humidifier it has been slightly better, but not as good as I would have expected, running 5 0r 6%

It was suggested that I reset the EPR to full time rather than ramp only which gave me a slight improvement.

Never had the machine stop on me during the night, but most nights I wake after 4-5 hours which I am not at all happy with and really must get it sorted.

From what has been said on here, often, is that advice from doctors is next to useless, pick the brains of those on the site and you will get there in the end.

Welcome, John David.

My initial thought was that there may be an intermittent loose connection between either the blower and humidifier, or between the humidifier and heated hose. If you have a standard hose, try that and see if it makes any difference. The fact that the issue recurs on a fairly regular basis indicates more likely that there is a control circuit problem, maybe in the heater. Is the tank getting hot? It should only be warm.

If the problem persists you may need to get the whole unit looked at by a specialist. Suppliers 27 and 28 on the supplier list (link at the top of this page) advertise CPAP repairs.

Concur. I think this is an indication that something is not quite right with this machine.

I'm kinda with deepbreathing on a control problem whether it's the humidifier heater shutting off on high temp and needs manual reset . If it's consistent in shutting off in an hour try using you cpap while you read or watch TV and keep an eye on it to see if the tank heater is really hot meaning it shut of on high temp or just starts getting cooler like you shut off the humidifier meaning the controller did it . Switching to a non heated hose will reduce the power consumption and the humidifier may stay on then meaning a weak power supply can't keep up and the S9 shuts off the humidifier. I've seen this with the Respironics after running for a while the blower stays on but humidifier shuts off. Change out the power supply probably went a way.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll work with these and see what comes of it. Regardless, I believe I'm getting a better rest.

I had an HC150 from a previous machine that held up well and works great but the one on my Respironics M series died and was not covered by warranty, the light worked as though it was on but the heating plate was not hot to the touch. Careful if you test that theory. The replacement for my machine humidifier was as much as a new machine so I go one and just use my old HC150, but I have found that a Honeywell whole room COLD air humidifier works 100% better. I still get the dry mouth but my sinuses are doing much better. I found with the heated air my sinuses swelled and it was harder to breath out. Your humidifier is probably broke.
