Dreamstation auto or Resmed S9 auto? - Ockrocket - 08-02-2016

I have been using a Dreamstation loan unit and am very happy with it, I was going to look at buying a brand new one.

But the Resmed S9 has also been suggested as a good unit.

Does anyone have any feedback on how the S9 compares to the Dreamstation?

Any specific pros or cons for either machine?

Any known issues for either one?

The S9 is a good solid unit but it has been superseded for a couple of years. You should get a very substantial discount if you can still find a new one in the marketplace.

You've been using the DreamStation which is new in the past year and ResMed has nothing as new as that. Even the S9 has been superseded by the A10 years ago. Also I think if you're happy, why change?

The reason for contemplating the change is that the Dreamstation is only a test loaner from a clinic so my respiratory specialist could get compliance data for getting my licence back.

And the S9 is supposed to be only about a year old and not had a lot of use.... and it is half the price of a new Dreamstation.

To top it off, I've been doing everything possible to get my commercial licence reinstated, at quite some expense, because I was told I would get my driving job back once I got it back.... but today they told me my secondment to an office role was being terminated as of Friday, and that I wouldn't be getting my driving job back.

Being a casual employee for the last ten years still means I'm instantly out of a job, after I left work this afternoon the manager rang me as I was on a bus heading home and told me not to bother coming in tomorrow, or for the rest of the week, as they had just decided to terminate me as of today.

Already having spent more money on specialists, medical tests, and lawyers than I should have... now having no job will make it even harder, so saving a buck is important.

I'd probably rather get a Dreamstation, but $1,200 is $1,200 after all, and I'm going to have to watch the dollars now.

At 62 with no formal qualifications finding another job won't be easy.. and I don't really want to go back to truck driving (current job was community transport/aged care related)

That sucks! It might be worth a word with the TWU. I was under the impression that even casual employees have certain levels of protection.

If you decide to go for a used machine, check the number of run hours to ensure you're not getting something which is older than claimed. Press the push dial and setting button simultaneously for three seconds to get into the clinician menu. Then navigate to see the number of run hours. Assume 8 to 10 hours a night to work out roughly how many nights the machine has been used. You should also get a new humidifier tank and gasket, just in case they are harbouring some sort of infection (a very small chance but why take the risk?)

I'm soe sorry to hear about your job being terminated.
If the machine you are looking at is in good condition, go for it, just make sure that it is an S9AutoSet.

If you like the Dreamstaton, you won't notice any difference getting a PRS1 60 Series Auto machine. They are the same generation as the S9, and were just replaced last December. They operate exactly like a Dreamstation, but at probably half the price.

I am very sorry to hear that. I know of a couple places in Australia, you can rent out a machine and it pays it off at the same time.
I have seen a couple second hand 60 series under a $1000 but that's still a lot of money. It does sound like the S9 is similar to S10, have you tried the S9 it at all?

I am sorry to hear that. I would be more than angry in your situation.

Given the situation you are in, an S9 Autoset or PRS1 60 Series Auto would be a good choice. Not as pretty as the current model, but just as functional.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.. still all ears for more comments.

I have a couple of weeks before my test unit is due to go back to the clinic, so I have some breathing space (pun intended Grin ) to decide on what to buy.

The place I got the price for the new unit from has come back to me with quite a reduction on the recommended retail price, still more than I want to spend though.

So now I weigh up the benefit of brand new with warranty against the second hand that may need a few bits, like the humidifier tank and seals replaced... so the $1,000 saved comes back to maybe $800.

For that price difference I'd probably lean towards the new unit.

I will give a few days before I make a final decision on it I think.
