"Wheezing" sound from mask - Rasseye - 08-06-2016
I just got my new Philips Dreamstation Auto CPAP. I used my mask from Resmed. When I exhale it makes a wheezing sound. If it's the mask, any recommendations?

Hi Rasseye - Welcome to the forum!
Check the mask's exhaust port for moisture. This is usually the culprit when you start hearing noises.

Could be moisture.. maybe just some strap adjustments are necessary. Different masks from different companies wouldn't change or cause noises.

Make sure it is assembled correctly. Even watch YouTube videos on it.
Make sure it is dry if you are washing it daily.
After that, try to determine where the sound is coming from. There's the vent holes. The swivel adapter (if it has one). Where the adapter goes into the hose. Anywhere a connection is made anywhere on the mask that involves air.

Thank you all for your helpful answers. I am brand new to using a CPAP. Last night I isolated the wheezing sound to a constant sound coming from the machine which gets louder when I breathe. I put the machine in a cabinet next to the bed and partially closed the cupboard...sound was somewhat isolated and my wife could not hear it (with earplugs). Hopefully the sleep specialists at Kaiser will be able to help me with settings and adjustments. Right now I am winging it while educating myself.

That is the sound of the blower. When you inhale, it has to spin faster to maintain pressure. Unless your machine is defective, it is quieter than a fan on in the room. Unless you focus your mind on it, and obsess about it, you will get used to it and not hear it any longer, the same as a fan in the room.

Yeah, new users can really hear that. Drives 'em nuts. But soon you'll be able to ignore it.
If the noise is, as chill says, louder than a fan, then there is something wrong.

If the smallest drop of water hits the exhaust port on my mask, it whistles. What I do is run my fingers across the little holes where the air jets out. This seems to clear out the water drop.
We have an air filter machine running in the bedroom. It makes just enough white noise to drown out the noise of the CPAP machine. The machine I have now seems much quieter than the ones I've had in the past.

I am also experiencing this. I feel like it's a somewhat groaning/wheezing noise. Since I do have asthma, it triggers me to cough when I hear it, even though I don't feel the need to cough. I'm trying to reprogram my brain that when I hear that start of a wheeze with the CPAP, I really am not wheezing and I don't need to cough.
But it does feel like it's groaning a bit when I exhale and inhale, as if it's adjusting to the pressure of my draw (inhale) and then my exhale.
Are you guys saying this is normal, and fine? I was wondering if it was a sign that maybe I need more pressure such that my inhale isn't being so forceful.
Is this noise something worth mentioning to the dr? Or is this just how CPAP is?
At my sleep study, I didn't hear anything. And for the first week or so at home on my CPAP, I didn't hear anything. It seems new to me that I'm hearing this groaning/wheezing... so that's what has me wondering what's up.
