Chest infection and difficult breathig - JamesW - 08-24-2016
Just putting the questions out there. What do CPAPers do when you have a chest infection with difficult breathing. I have an underlying lung disorder and have a current chest infection. It has become very difficult to use my faithful companion every night, for only a short duration, until I get over the infection. So I have been skipping a night here and there over the last week. Can't wait to get well so I can get back to CPAPing full time. As funny as it seems I actually sleep better strapped on now days.

Most of us just use our PAP machines unless advised not to by our doc.
What kind of chest infection? Bacterial? Does your doc have you on antibiotics?
And, like you, most of use have become accustomed to the machine.

Yep, I am on antibiotics for it. I have bronchiectasis and that allows bugs to take hold and it is more difficult to blitz them. It has made it harder to breathe at night with the mask on. I have only missed two single nights due to it, not two in a row. Hopefully the antibiotics will start to take hold over the next day or so and I can resume normal programming.

It might be worth getting a F&P Simplus. While I love the Eson, sometimes I mouth breathe and sometimes I am congested. The Simplus lets me sleep with my machine at those times.

Antibiotics don't do anything for bronchitis. They are intended to prevent you from slinking down into pneumonia. Generally, I agree that you should just keep using your cpap, but you might give a call to your sleep doctor about it. Several members have been specifically told to stop using cpap while active bronchitis or pneumonia while others have not - your GP is a jack-of-all-trades vs. a lung specialist, so worthy of a call, IMHO.
Interestingly enough, since I started taking medication for acid-reflux, I have not had another case of bronchitis (6 years now). I was getting it at least once a year before that for 6 or 7 years.

I have a lung disease called bronchiectasis wich is abnormal widening of the bronchi or their branches, causing a risk of infection. The anitbiotics are for the bacteria that has taken hold. I have been on acid reflux medication for the last two years as well. It has been a life changer. I used my CPAP machine last night and slept better. It has only been one or two nights early in this boutof illness that I was struggling , so this experience is one more for the memory bank.

Yes, I totally agree with you about the acid reflux meds. It made not only a difference in the bronchitis issues, but my blood pressure returned to normal as well. I didn't even know I had it, having never had heartburn.
I asked at my appointment with the PA at the sleep center and she just said to call if I get either bronchitis or pneumonia. I guess there are specific questions they need answered as to whether to continue or not while being treated.
