Drop in AHI - georg - 07-26-2012

Over the last couple of weeks my AHI dropped from 3 to about 1.5.
As I do not fill different, I checked the graphs and saw that it was the length off the events that have changed.
Before the drop they were from 10 to 15 seconds, now most of them are 8 to 9 second.
(picture attached)
So no change in the events only they are not registered, as they are just below 10 sec.
Is 10 sec same kind of magic limit, or just a practical one?

Welcome to the forum georg
An apnea to be scored has to last at least 10 seconds

Think about how often you breathe when you're asleep- your respiratory rate. A pause of eight or nine seconds is considered normal. The best measurement is how you feel. You are having less apneas by the definition of apnea- cesation of breathing for over 10 seconds. Good work. Keep it up.

Hi Georg Welcome

We were actually having a small discussion earlier in the week or maybe last week about this type thing. Kind of wondering where the magic number of 10 seconds came from. In the end, we took some guesses and left it at that! There just don't seem to be answers for that that other than best guesses.

By the way, your chart looks great! I'm a wee bit jealous! Mine looks like a lie detector at a liar's convention! ha!

No, there's nothing magical about the 10 seconds that are required for an apnea or a hypopnea to score.

Dropping the number of seconds from 10-15 to 8-9 is probably not significant, especially since your AHI is so low.

It can take up to six months for CPAP therapy to be effective. Sometimes the improvement is so gradual we don't notice it. The only things I can suggest are just the common sense type things. Get some exercise, practice good sleep hygiene, and be patient.
