CPAP useage in hot weather - JamesW - 02-11-2017

Down here in Australia we have had a series of heatwaves over the first months of the year. Yesterday is was 115 degree F or 47 C  and last night it was 86 degrees F or 30C in the house at 2.30am , just far too hot to have a CPAP mask on as I was drowning in perspiration. My long term average AHI  is .60 and I know it is not a deal breaker to abstain from CPAP for a night or two. I am someone who perspires a fair bit in the heat and I am just drowning under my nasal mask. That causes large leaks and little sleep. There is not much to do except ride out  the weather pattern for a couple of days. I use the A/C during the hottest part of the day but switch it off at bed time, as the expense of running it 24 hours is a bit much for my wallet. Sad   As a kid we used to get summers as hot as this one, with no A/C, but we were used to it I suppose. I must be getting soft as I age. Rolleyes

I think you would find it is actually cheaper to keep the aircon running overnight on the really hot days... it will use more power trying to drag the temperature back down than it does to maintain it at a comfortable temperature.

We run ours non stop during the worst of the hot spells, I'm one who can't cope with humidity at all... I turn in to a cranky old fart that is not pleasant to live with.
I have to stay fairly vigilant with my CPAP compliance for my commercial driving licence, and my specialist is a "must hit all the numbers" man or he won't sign off on it.... so I just have to wear whatever costs are involved in staying compliant.

Can you adjust the humidity settings on the machine to alleviate the issue?

Good luck with getting through today, another 47 deg plus day for us Western Sydney-siders.. and many others here in Oz.

Cheers,
Ock.

Yep, the "heat goes on" here in Oz. Right with you on the humidity, I sweat more than I can drink on big humidity days I reckon. Give me dry heat any day.

Could you find a way to chill the air going into your cpap ?

See if Remzz liners make one for your mask. They've started making them for nasal pillows masks now. Getting that plastic/silicone off your skin will help. Will help with leaks, too. If you are using your humidifier, try using it in "passover", meaning water in the container but heat is off. As hot as it is there, it will get to you.

Only in the eastern states - we're having record rainfall and low temps here in Perth.

It's pathetic the way you Sydneysiders carry on. Bigwink Toughen up Princess - spend some time in the Pilbara where your so-called "heatwave" is normal weather. Wink

It' the humidity here, up in the Pilbara it is a dry heat. I was out at Maralinga about 18 months ago and a 45C day was nice. No humidity. This Princess's dress has wilted Dielaughing  Good luck with the rain in WA, send it our way. And, I hate Sydney. We are out of here in 18 months heading for the bush.

Not really - in the coastal areas (eg Port Hedland (where I used to live) and Karratha) it gets extremely humid - quite oppressive.

Yeah - great place for tourists but I'd hate to live there. I'd rate it as my least favourite capital city.

We had 114mm yesterday, so I think we've had our fill for the time being. You're welcome to some.

I'm an "Ex Mex" from Melbourne and Western Victoria.. so working in 42 deg. heat out in the paddocks all day long, and -2 deg with a wind chill taking another 5 deg off was just fine too...... but in humidity I'm a wet dishrag, I bloody hate it.  Oh-jeez

And I'm stuck in Sydney for the foreseeable future, my Mrs works for the NSW State Government and doesn't want to give up her job.  Rolleyes

I wonder if some ideas on this old thread could be making your life a little better?
