Sleep apnea medical device sales market expected to grow through 2017

Those looking for medical device sales jobs may want to consider companies that develop and manufacture products to treat sleeping disorders.

According to a new report by the global research firm MarketsandMarkets, the global sleep apnea device market, which was valued at more than $7 billion last year, is expected to increase to $19.72 billion by 2017.

The report found that the demand for sleep apnea medical devices is gaining momentum with approximately 100 million worldwide suspected of having obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is the most common type of the disorder. Currently, North America is the largest sleep apnea medical device sales market, followed by Europe and Asia.

Medtronic recently expanded its presence in the market after it was granted FDA new label clearance for its Pillar implants to treat snoring and sleep apnea. The new labeling will allow surgeons to implant up to five devices per patient per treatment for people with wider mouths and softer palate tissue.

Other companies to watch, according to the MarketandMarket report, include Phillips Respironics and ResMed, which make up a combined 70 percent of the market, as well as Fisher, Paykel Healthcare and CareFusion Corporation.
