headache/sinus pain from CPAP - duece12345 - 06-17-2017

Been on CPAP for eight months with good results (thanks to this board and mods).  since I have started therapy, I have woke up with a dull cheekbone pain and sinus headache.  I initially thought it was sinus problems, but the ENT swears there is no infection.  I took a few days off of therapy and the pain stopped, so I am fairly sure the CPAP is causing it.  Any ideas with what would cause it?

Max: 7.6
Min: 4.6
Response: standard
Epr: on/fulltime level 1
Climate/tube temp: Auto

Thanks!

Deuce -

I'm not sure what's going on with you but I guess I'm writing to reassure you in a sense.  All of my settings are identical to yours - pressure range, EPR 1 full time and Auto climate line.  I also use the same mask although sometimes also use the P10s.  I do not experience what you do re cheekbone pain and sinus headaches.  One possibility with the Dreamwear is that the exhaust port at the top of your head may become obstructed during the night by your pillow and you might be incidentally re breathing exhaled air or exhaled air is not adequately escaping.  The very few time I have woken up with headaches I have suspected this as the problem because there is nothing in my data on Sleepyhead that reveals a bad night.  You might also try a different mask like the P10 pillows and see if that changes anything.  If so, you know its the mask.  If you post some data maybe we can drill down on a reversible problem.  Don't despair or ever give up.

I have personally found that certain mask caused me similar issues. For instance when I tried the Amara View, I woke up with intense sinus pressure that lingered all day. Also when I tried the F20, no matter how loose I put the upper straps it always put pressure on my nose. I would therefore wake up with a headache. I am convinced that it had to be the mask as when I use my quattro fx I never wake up with headaches or sinus pressure.

Another thought is that the pressure might be causing you to clench your teeth in your sleep.  An un-even bite would explain the one sided pain.

Doctor said my headaches were caused by CO2 retention, upped the starting min and it went away. Your numbers would have me gasping for air, I personally need 6.4 as my minimum. YMMV

Please post some graphs as one of the other members suggested.  There are so many different things that could cause this. I've tried many masks and have also had bad luck with both the Amara View and the F20, like the other member, but have had the best results with the Dreamwear.  Also, in my case, I need much higher pressures, but if they go to the higher end of the range, I wake up with nausea, headache, and dizziness.  So I wear an oral appliance to keep the airway open a bit more, and this keeps the pressures lower.  One size does not fit all with pap therapy, I'm afraid.  What does your Sleep Doc say about your condition?

Keep trying, don't give up, and post some data please if you can.  This can be frustrating, but hopefully with detective work this can be figured out.  Cheers!

Do you have issues with your sinuses? I would check with both your sleep doc and a different ENT.

Thanks for all the replies. I have had sinus issues in the past, but this is unlike anything I have felt. The soreness is even in all sinus cavities. The company that I get my CPAP products from has a tech that I have spoke to a couple times and I got feeling he had no clue what he was talking about. I have yet to see my sleep doc, so I guess that is my next stop. What about turning the pressure up? Would that help a C02 retention issue? my current pressure keeps me below 1.5 most nights so I dont know if I should mess with that.

Can you post your graphs? I would not raise the pressure.

If you have congestion do the NeilMed saline rinse kit.
