Switching from full face mask to pillows - DPerretta - 09-06-2017

I have been using a Resmed Quattro, and while most nights my AHI is under 2, I wake up constantly.  Usually 8-12 times an hour.  It's been three months and I do not believe the situation will get better, as I am a stomach sleeper.  I have tried to train myself to sleep on my back or side, but always end up on my stomach.  I believe I am waking up because of how strange and distorted your back becomes with a full face mask while you sleep.  So, I bought an Airfit P10, and while it is definitely more comfortable, I am having a few problems.
1. The machine is noisier for some reason than it was with the full face mask.
2. Harder to breathe back through the mask with mouth closed.
3. If I keep my mouth open and breathe through that every few minutes I get air blowing out my mouth accompanied by weird noises.
Does anyone have any suggestions.  This mask is definitely more comfortable, but doesn't seem like it is more effective.  Looking into buying a chin strap, but I think the main problem is the sinus pressure, and difficulty breathing back through the mask.  I am using a Resmed Auto Set 9, believe it is on apap mode, though there is continuous pressure all night.  Don't have all the details as to the settings because the VA is tipped lip about this stuff for some reason.
Thanks

The vent on the P10 doesn't make as much noise as the vent on the Quattro. This probably makes the machine seem like it's louder.

If you can try moving up to a larger nasal pillow this should help you breath better.

One thing about nasal masks is you do have to keep your mouth closed to prevent air leaks.

Mask Primer forgot one thing read the mask primer. It'll help you out. http://www.apneaboard.com/wiki/index.php?title=Mask_Primer

Practice

Use your machine while doing an activity you enjoy, read a book, watch TV, etc.

A loose fitting cervical collar helps a lot of people here and is frequently preferred by users to a chin strap.  It helps keep the chin from dropping or tucking.
Try to keep your tongue on the roof of your mouth.

Frequently we see the need for a larger pillow size than initially fitted with.

And read the Mask Primer.

Questions,   Please ask.

Dose you machine have a setting for nasal and one for fullface. If so change it to what you are using.

thanks, ironically enough it was already set to pillows.  Wondering if I should try this with the old full face mask and see if i sleep better with it on this setting.

You might try the correct setting with the full face mask. It may make a difference!

Did you ever resolve this?

I’ve just taken delivery of an Airfit P10. It seems the exhale vent are blocked I can’t breathe out. Is this usual, I can’t get air to pass through the vents at all, help? I’ve used a nasal mask for years no problems.

Assuming the mask is dry, it is possible the mask is defective. There have been reports by other members who received defective masks that had the same issues you are having. I would contact the provider and make arrangements for a replacement.
