Blockage behind Adam's Apple causing obstructions? - MyronH - 10-03-2018

Is it possible to have a blockage of airway right behind the Adam's apple?

Lately when laying on my back at night, and also sometimes during the day, I feel like something is stuck behind it and I always have to clear my throat. I'm not sure what to do or if the DISE procedure even went that far down my throat to check for blockage.

My wife had something similar to that but I assure you that you don't have what she had.

My suggestion is to see an ENT to see what is going on.

The "Adam's Apple" aka Larynx is a structure that composes part of the airway. There is no airway behind the Larynx, it is part of it. There are dozens of possible causes of upper airway obstruction, and some may originate in the Larynx, or nearby. A search of the terms: "upper airway obstruction larynx" will offer a lot of possibilities.

Well I had a DISE procedure but the ENT was really vague afterwards about what he saw. He just said the base of my tongue was my major collapse. And he would never go into details about the procedure or if he saw anything else.

IMHO you need a new ENT.  Look for one that specializes in your issues, THAT makes a big difference.

Due to an Extremely serious accident and the surgical recovery from it my wife's dominant vocal cord nerve, the left laryngeal nerve was cut in her chest.  The fix then was to assist the vocal cord closure with a Teflon injection in her vocal cord to stiffen it.  She was treated for asthma and depression, but the issues were breathing difficulties (falsely Asthma) and her cognitive abilities were impaired (we didn't see this because the onset was slow and we saw this as normal.)  The Teflon had formed a granuloma that restricted her breathing tube by 85%.  Her symptoms were those that many of us see in our Pre-CPAP days.

My point is that it took the right specialist ENT to see and be aware of the issue enough to know how to correct it.  After 40 years we finally were, by chance, referred to an ENT that had actually performed the procedure early in his career and had written many papers on the alternatives thru his career.

When it's 'stuck' do you have breathing difficulty? How about swallowing?
