Permanently Disable ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet Cellular? - dreamstream - 03-02-2019

Is it possible to permanently disable ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet cellular rather than just putting it into airplane mode and getting prompted occasionally to turn it back on? I'm not working with a DME or RT and would prefer to just shut off permanently rather than getting a prompt all the time. Haven't been able to find a way to do that?

Found this link to a thread on this board.

It was my gut feeling that ResMed monitored your equipment regardless if there was a physician or DME attached to the account or not and that the data went into their massive research database. (https://www.resmed.com/epn/en/healthcare-professional/research-and-education/research.html) Therefore, in the interest of science and the development of better sleep apnea solutions, I decided to leave mine activated whether or not some DME is looking over my shoulder.

It's not clear to me whether someone has to pay a subscription fee (paid on the backend by insurance) for that data service, or if ResMed just has some kind of sweet deal for every machine to call back to the mother ship.

Note also that firmware updates happen over that plan, so you'd miss out on those. That said, haven't heard of bugs with these machines.

You have to removed the outer shell of it and mess with the circuit/wiring. While I *could* do that, I've opted to just trust & believe in Airplane Mode.

You can't disable it until after the warranty period or it voids the warranty. Unfortunately, the modem is the primary culprit, outside of power surges, that will fry the board, so if you aren't using it, no real reason to have it.

Are you saying the cellular modem fries the main board often? Is this based on info from a repair shop?

Yes, that is what the repair people at my DME have noticed. It doesn't happen often (they get very few Resmed machines in for repair), but the modem overheating seems to be a problem with machines that were sold in the first 2 years of availability of the Airsense series. Don't know why - they just send the machine in for a board replacement.

Unless people COMPLAIN to Resmed, they won't make any changes. I've complained myself that the modem should come shut off and I as a consumer, can decide if I want to turn it on, not the other way around. With my brother's Respironics machine, we just tossed the modem into the bag after the DME sent in the compliance report.

Unfortunately, ResMed (and Phillips) does not consider the end-user the customer. They consider the Doctors and DMEs the customer.

I bought my machine outright, no prescription, and without a DME... so my guess would be that they have some kind of sweet deal.  It updates MyAir with my info every morning, never cost me a cent.
