Full Mask makes nasal breathing difficult? - Diotima245 - 05-25-2019

Does anyone have a issue with  nasal breathing under a full  face mask? It feels like my nostrils  shrink/close up with it. If I use nasal pillows I don't have the same issue so it sounds as if it's  mostly a FMM issue.

Have you changed the mask setting on your machine?
Or you can turn the minimum pressure up to compensate.

Go to the Clinicians menu by pressing and holding the dial and home button for 3 seconds.

Go to Settings, scroll down to Mask. Change from Pillows to FullFace.
Do this each time you change mask types.

Note: You still may feel air starved with a minimum setting of 4cm, especially using a FullFace mask.

Makes sense I am using what the clinician set it at 4cm-12cm range and I've found nasal pillows comfortable while FFM is like I'm barely breathing.

I betcha that feeling of being air starved (barely breathing) should be resolved via the mask setting. I do know most CPAP users need more than a low setting of 4, otherwise they feel air starved.

You mean in regards to mask type? or "run mask fit"? I think mask fit cranks up the pressure which I tried with FFM and my nose still felt congested. I guess FFM just doesnt work for me.

I was attempting to refer to mask type. And yes, it is possible that FFM might not be best for you. Myself, I’ve only used FFMs so far, as I’m trying to train myself not to mouth breath before trying other styles of mask. Regardless, best to your success.

Mouth breathing isn't a issue for me.

Perhaps not so much a full face mask issue as the fact that nasal pillows really help inflate your nostrils and power through some nasal blockages and congestion. With a FF mask the pressure outside your nostrils and inside them is the same. With nasal pillows the pressure is higher inside your nostrils and they inflate like a balloon -- well, not like a balloon, nothing near that much, but you get the idea.

The other issue is that nasal masks in general have been shown to work better than "full face" masks (oronasal masks), needing slightly less pressure for the same efficacy.

So, a full face mask is, to an extent, the mask of last resort.
