The repair people said that they start seeing an increase in Resmed machines needing repair or replacement about the 18,000 mark.

Not sure about the comment about putting it on the floor.  My previous unit was a Phillips.  12 Years old, always on the floor, and not a problem.  I updated, only because the insurance covered a replacement, but, not the supplies for the Phillips.  I really wish they made 1 button you could push to start the humidifier like the phillips.  I have noticed that this new unit sometimes does not shut off, but, it might be just me forgetting something...
