Cervical collar sizing... - Aludj - 05-24-2020

My sleep apnea includes "clustered flow restrictions, hypopnea, and obstructive apnea", as described in the Apnea Board Wiki pages

The Wiki page recommendation for Soft Cervical Collar is, quote:

Quote:For our purpose the collar must be a looser fit. Therefore, a collar longer than the measured neck circumference should be selected.

That's going to be problematic for me, with measured neck size of 18", using shirt collar size of 19". My initial search for SCC showed available sizes of small and large, but that does not help much. The Caldera website does give the size in inches:

It does not seem, that there is sufficient adjustment to fit my neck, but I could be wrong. The travel size Caldera is available, but may be to small for my neck size.

Dr Dakota lists the large size as 15" to 22" neck size, would be perfect for me, but it is out of stock. I did not find this size cervical collar available so far.

I need some help for selecting the right SCC, any advise would be appreciated.

TIA...

Thanks for your help Sleeprider...

The Coreflex Ultra has two heights, 2 ½ and 3 ½ inches. What is the best way to measure/decide the right height for the collar?

As a side note...

I seem to recall that about a third of board members are mouth breathers. One would think, that online CPAP stores would carry cervical collars, if they carry CPAP pillows, but no. This seems to be a missed business opportunity in more ways than one...

Try to determine how much room you have from the bottom of your chin to where your neck starts.
If you have a short neck, go with the 2.5" collar, if you have a longer neck, choose a taller collar.

You don't want to restrict movement, but yet enough support to stop your mouth or jaw from dropping open and/or chin tucking.

Thanks OpalRose...

I measured little over 3" distance, will order the Corflex ULTRA CERVICAL COLLAR MEDIUM 3 1/2" - 18-22".

The Eliminator Series Washable Travel Sleep Pillow will be ordered as well, like the narrowing cushion in the back.

Is there any view on the ideal foam density for this purpose?

The coreflex product says "medium firm density foam."

RE: Cervical collar sizing... - Sleeprider - 05-25-2020

I think medium-firm should work fine. All we need to do is encourage the chin not to tuck and apply pressure at the back of the jaw. I hope to see more reviews of the different collar options. That would be really helpful to a lot of members. I’ll talk to Supersleeper about a subject tag so the collar reviews are easier to find

Good plan.

I was  wondering about this earlier, which is basically an answer to the question "how soft is soft?"

I think there's probably a balance between support and comfort.

I bought a cervical collar by 3M called FUTURO™ Soft Cervical Collar. It works fine. Same thickness all the way around so when I use it I can't also use a pillow. Length (around neck) and front height (where your chin goes) are adjustable.

I’d encourage any one that uses a cervical collar to leave a review in the review section of the forum. Comfort, sizing effectiveness and any modifications would be good to include. We m hoping to make a Cervical Collar tag available so these reviews are easy to find.
