Phillips worn out...multiple questions - Makai1959 - 07-21-2020

My Phillips machine is about 6yo and I was diagnosed and received my settings at sea level and then moved to 5000ft for the last 4 years and now 7000ft. It seems my machine does not put out enough pressure by the sound of the machine and the air blowing out of the mask. I'm also not sleeping very well at all....tired all the time, wake up often. So here's some quesrtions:

1- Is my machine wearing out?
2- Is it the altitude?
3- Since I've had so long is my SD card full
4- Can I clear it
5- Can I download software to read the SD after I clear to see what's happening
6- Can I turn up my machine?

Open to suggestions too. I'll also be looking to find a new Sleep Doctor, but would like to improvements ASAP

You are due for a new machine, and the most logical replacement would be an Auto CPAP. For a number of reasons, most of us prefer the Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset CPAP. If you have insurance, talk to your supplier about a replacement. Any doctor, not just a sleep specialist, can renew your prescription if needed. If you are not well insured then you can use your existing prescription to source a replacement online. Me have many suppliers in the Supplier list.

We don't now what model your current machine is. Respironics encompasses many different models and series, however 5-years is the normal lifetime, and you're beyond that.

Altitude can significantly affect the settings you need. Auto CPAP can help with that, but if your machine is equipped with a SD card, your first step should be to upload your data to a computer with the current version of OSCAR, which replaced Sleepyhead several years ago. You can post a couple current charts, and we can see exactly where you stand.

The SD card is filled until full, and then the oldest data is replaced. You probably have up to one or two years of recent use on the SD card. Upload it now.

The SD card can be deleted or re-formatted to FAT 32 anytime. This destroys all data on the card.

Your machine settings can be changed. The best way to do this is to post some charts, which will tell us what machine you have, what the current settings are, and what direction you need to go to optimize.

Thanks, I'll take your suggestions and post more information tonight. I just started a new job....I'm an ER Nurse serving the Navaho in New Mexico and need some good rest. Until my insurance kicks in, I have to try and make improvements in my sleep quality ASAP.

Thanks Bill. Depending on what we see in your data, we can also direct you to good quality used equipment that will be less expensive than insurance with an 80/20 share, especially if a test is involved. I encourage you to look into which durable medical equipment providers will be in-network for your pending insurance, and try to assemble relevant records of your past sleep study and prescription. You know the drill under HiPAA that you are entitled to copies of those records. If you have a primary physician you have a good relationship with, provide copies of the records and ask them to take charge of your CPAP needs. That will enable you to get an updated prescription for auto CPAP, preferably Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset. We will be able to use your data to recommend prescription settings. By working ahead, even if insurance is not currently active, you will be better prepared to obtain equipment as soon as possible. Try to avoid being referred to a sleep specialist. They are pretty useless and very expensive.

If your card works like mine (and I assume it does) when it fills up it starts writing the data on the oldest data. If you do not want to keep the data you can format the card on your computer (fat 32). One pressure of your machine has not changed but the oxygen in the air is less at higher altitudes. You might want to do an night time oxygen study or buy a cheap model (I bought a CMS50F) and use it every week to check night O2 levels.

At 6 years your machine is about done for. If you have good insurance find a Dr and get a prescription. If no insurance, you can get a good price on Supplier #2 (go to the shopping cart at the top of the screen) in any case the ResMed is a far better machine than the Phillips. Have the Dr list the name and model on the prescription or they will give you the Phillips or other inferior machine. Good luck and welcome to a great place with some real experts dealing with apnea

I guess i need to say. i have apnea really bad and use BIPAP.

Is the RESMED 10 autosense still the machine I need. My GF is a NP and can write me a scrip for whatever I ask for.

OK if you have BiLevel/BiPAP/BPAP now, you're best bet is the ResMed AirCurve 10 VAuto.

The autosence is a Cpap. The AirCurve is the BIPAP the VAUTO IS THE AirCurve you will want. I’m sure there will be others that will 2nd this.
