Sore nostril from the mask P10 - Simo50 - 11-25-2020

I am using the RESMED AIRFIT P10 PILLOW MASK as part of my initial trial and have changed to a different mask not because I don't like it but the inside of my nostril has become quite raw and has scabbed over just on the inside on the edge of my nostril. It has been suggest to put pawpaw cream to assist. I am wondering if this is common and whether I need to look at a different mask or whether I need to change the size of the cushion or I have it too tight or ???
Thanks

Hi Simo50,
It can be a common problem if you are using the wrong size nasal pillow. The pillow should not be inserted into the nostril, but just sit under the nose with the tips of the pillow in your nostrils a tiny bit. If it goes in far, your will have irritation.
Try using a size up in pillow size.

Also, to lessen any irritation, use a lanolin type cream just inside the nostrils or a nasal gel.

For the time being though, you will want to allow your nostrils to heal before trying the nasal pillows again.

Hi OpalRose
Thanks for your reply and advise, reading what you said I probably need to go up a size a place it better. I agree a break from the P10 is better than persisting. I'll try again in a week.
Thanks Simon

I had the same issue when I first started on the p30i. I had the medium size and I was waking up with the whole pillow in my right nostril and it was red raw. Went to a large size along side lanolin and it's good now once it healed over.

Here is the lanolin I grabbed in Australia it was only about $10 from the chemist.

You can put it on during the day and it should help heal it also.

Thanks cpaper101
Yes sounds the same. Definitely a size up then and thanks for the hint re the lanolin-I'll grab some tomorrow.
How have you found the P30i?

Really love the p30i. The hose being out of the way on the top is nice to, and you can sleep on your side easily. You can wear it quite loosely and it just stays put I have found. I started on the n10 at first but it was to easy to just throw off. I have n30i connectors to as you can switch between them on the headgear but I notice the holes seem small and can’t quite get them aligned all through the night.

Others have said that the problem is using the wrong size pillow, but that didn't work for me. I tried the large and the small, but both were even worse than the medium. I found that I had to change to a Respironics pillow mask for several nights until my nose healed. Using lubricant helped keep it from becoming irritated again, but eventually it will happen again.

The problem is the shape of the pillows. My nostrils are shaped | | but the pillows are / \. All of the pillows are / \ for all brands and sizes, so I'm just stuck. Different lubricants make no difference - I have found that just the cheapest petroleum jelly is as good as the most expensive fancy stuff. The P10 (medium) gives me the best leak rate, and I can go for a month or so until I develop a sore and have to switch to the Respironics for a night or two until I recover. I'd use the Respironics all the time, but it leaks more than the Resmed P10.

RE: Sore nostril from the mask P10 - Canuck 2 - 11-25-2020

I have been using the P10 mask for approx 5 years and I usually have a issue is with a new pillow because they seem a little softer. But a little lanolin on the inside of nose and it does wonders. After that no more issues and the mask does wonders. I have tried different masks but the P10 is supreme over a lot of others. If you want to make it adjustable you can order the Resmed N30 head band that fits and wears well (part # 64216). What I found with the adjustable head band is it kind of automatically adjusts the tension with their special clip and you can also reshrink  the head band as it stretches like the regular P10 head band, I just heat some water in the kettle and place the stretched head band in a coffee cup and pour and swirl the band for 30 seconds in the hot water and pour water and then quench in cold water. Good for many reuses  until it is just worn out.

Great advice in this thread already. I notice that the P10 pillows start irritating my nose after several month's use. Switching in a new pillow helps as the new ones are softer and less stiff than old ones. I also tried the Lansinoh cream and it helps too!

Thanks everyone for your replies and ideas. There are some here that I hadn't thought of ie the N30 head band.
Being fairly new to this there are so many things to learn and get my head around not to mention the reading and interpreting of the data, which I must admit I am looking forward to as it is an area of interest.
Should have done this years ago - no more snoring or grumpy family complaining i am keeping them up. Smile
