Nostrils get bigger over night? - DocWils - 05-24-2013

I have noticed a new phenomenon over the past month or so - I start the night with a perfect fit for my nasal pillow, but by dawn they have shifted inward of the nostril and are leaking like a sieve. When I fist got fitted, it was pretty clear that M was my size, S was way too small and L was so big they couldn't get a seal. But I am thinking that maybe I need now to try a L again. Has anyone else notice their nostrils "stretching" or otherwise growing over time using nasal pillows?

I thought that I was imagining things. A good fit at bedtime, closer to morning I'm experiencing leaks. Never thought my nostrils would stretch.

Last night I tried L and it was great. Far more comfortable and a good seal, less pressure on the nose, too and better air flow. But if I needed to go up a size after just under a year, what will I need to do after 9 years? Do they do size xxxxxxl?

You will have to go to running two CPAPs, with just the hose from each one stuck up each nostril.

Part of this is due, I suspect, to the pillows losing elasticity as they age.

My nose has lost elasticity as I have aged. In fact, all of me has lost elasticity as I have aged. Sad

They were petty new pillows, perhaps a month old or less. And yes, the nose does lose elasticity as you age - I am sure we all know about drooping bits of the body as aging occurs, what you may not know is the nose is the first thing to start drooping. And it droops considerably over time. Which means I face an old age looking like a probiscus monkey.

Nasal pillows have a replacement schedule of 2-3 weeks, according to the insurance companies I have dealt with.

Mine last me well over two months, and I extend the life of the mask itself, too. The straps lose their elasticity after a few weeks and have to be tightened, so that's a factor that may contribute to leaking.
