Adjustment period for increased pressure? - moigo - 06-08-2013

Hi everyone,

I am a newby here. Apnea has changed from mild (2005 sleep study) and mainly positional to upper level of moderate. I feel I must adjust. Pressure was increased from 7.5 to 9.0, last night first night. I woke up as many times as at lower setting although no night sweats. I am disappointed to not see longer blocks of sleep. Is there often an adjustment time when machine pressure is upped or is it possible CFS and anxiety are greater contributors to problem than I thought. Feedback would be most appreciated.

I would think you might need to adjust to the changes but hang in there for more suggestions and best of luck to you.

It usually takes a few nights before your body responds to a change in pressure.

I don't know if your machine is data-capable, but if it is I would advise you to get some software and monitor your progress.

Your first sentence is encouraging. From what I can see this machine only indicates total run hours and average compliance and otherwise isn't data-capable. I will have to educate myself regarding machines and software. Thx, Sleepster. Smile

It can take some time to adjust to a "large" jump such as your doc made. No two nights are the same so it could take several nights for everything to settle down. Keep working at it.

Try sitting up during the day with the mask on and the machine on. This will help you get used to the different sensations.

As for the CFS, anything that effects your sleep should be considered. Just as high blood pressure is taken into consideration with anything that has to do with the heart. Make sure your sleep doc knows about all other conditions you have. You may have to remind them. If you are on medication for the CFS, make sure that doc knows you have sleep apnea.

I should say ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis). "CFS" is such a trivializing name but many are unfamiliar with the former term. Yes, I mentioned the illness to the sleep doc as well as anxiety. I'm feeling somewhat more optimistic. Thanks for your encouragement and good advice.

Having ME and anxiety will affect your sleep. I would bet that the change in pressure has caused you more anxiety and which results in less sleep and then more anxiety and thus the cycle continues. It's easy to say relax and don't fret about it, but I know that is hard to do. Instead allow yourself some time to adjust. Everyone is different. You might need more or less time to adjust to the change than others.

If your sleep at the new pressure is not worse than it was at the old pressure, consider that a good thing. Since your machine isn't data capable, you'll just have to go on how well you feel after several nights, even a week. Are you less tired during the day? Do you nap longer/shorter or more/less often than before the pressure change? If necessary keep a log and then share that with your doctor. Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Will do. I did have some anxiety initially about the change in pressure. I'm cool with it now. The nights are about the same. Yes, I need to be patient. Thx for your comments iSnooze.

What you could do, if you are past the compliance crap and your doc doesn't look at the data (most do not), is drop your pressure down a point for a week or two then go back up. This will help you get used to the difference over a larger period of time.
