Thanks for the update. It does seem to be a quirk of KDE/Plasma that do not automount is the default.
If you can find the settings page referred to in the link in my earlier post, you can change it so it does automount - but I'm not familiar with KDE.

I found the setting and changed it, although I sort of have mixed feelings about it.  I see the default of not mounting a device by default as something that gives a little more security / control where it isn't mounted until you decide what to do with it - i.e what program you want to use to work on it...  The idea is to keep a potential auto-running (malware?) file on the device from starting unless you actually give it permission...
How much difference it makes is probably arguable, but....
