Help- Resmed Mirage FX- settings - bergen - 06-27-2013

Hi-
Switching over from the Twilight Nasal Pillow Mask to the Resmed Mirage FX Nasal Cushions. My CPAP is the Resmed S8 Autoset II.

It is a little bit strange that one should use the Swift setting, which is for nasal pillows masks, versus the Activa setting when Activa seems to be a nasal mask.
Any thoughts?

On that note, what exactly do the mask settings do? If the machine is set at 10.4 pressure with the Activa mask setting, will that provide a different pressure in practice than a 10.4 pressure setting on using the Swift mask setting? If not, then what function do the mask settings have?

Also is the new Rescan 4.3 software compatible with the Resmed S8 Autoset II?

Thanks
Ruby

hi Ruby and welcome to forum ... different masks have different airflow rates (intentional leak) through masks vents at different pressures

resmed machines need to know mask type to work out unintentional leak (mask/mouth leak)
unintentional leak = total leak - intentional leak

for Mirage FX, would select .. Activa or Mirage (both nasal masks)
S9 mask selection is simpler than S8, one select mask type (pillows, nasal, full face)

resscan compatible with S8 but you need "resmed data card reader" and only works on windows

Based on the Respironics description of their Resistance Control settings, telling the machine what sort of mask is in use allows the machine to compensate for the pressure loss because of hose and mask resistance. For example, if you have a full face mask, there isn't much other than the hose resistance between the mask pressure and the pressure supplied by the machine. However, with nasal pillows, trying to push that air through the smaller tubes means that the pressure will have dropped by the time it gets to your airway. Hence the machine will compensate and provide a little bit of extra pressure, so that the correct pressure ends up happening in your airway.

I suspect the ResMed mask settings serve a similar function.

Based on the Respironics Resistance Control settings, it appears that only nasal pillows require any sort of compensation. Nasal masks and full face masks have the same setting of x1. So I would agree with zonk as well as your instinct that Activia or Mirage setting would be preferable over the Swift setting for your new mask.

all Resmed nasal masks have the same vents leaks but based on the charts
Standard is mask setting for Mirage FX on an S8 and Nasal on an S9 http://www.resmed.com/us/assets/documents/service_support/pressure_flow_rates/1012648_pressure-vs-flow_usa_eng.pdf
