EPR and Centrals - Geoffrey - 04-07-2022

Hello and thank you.

Can EPR cause central apneas?

RE: EPR and Centrals - Crimson Nape - 04-07-2022

Yes!  The difference in pressure during the change of respiration direction will cause a CO2 washout in the body.  CO2 is responsible for triggering a breath reflex.

In treatment emergents central are caused by lower CO2 levels. Meaning your Cpap is doing a good job. EPR helps you with flow limit and H events (both are but different levels of apnea).

And because of this some people get more centrals using EPR. THEY usually go away after using it a few weeks. So we do move people off and back on after central go down.
