Sleep Apnea with parasomnia - Funktastic - 10-28-2022

This boils down to personal experiences. Anyone suffer from parasomnia trying to maintain successful cpap therapy? How do you deal with it?

For those unfamiliar, parasomnia is several things, including "sleep walking", but most all essentially involve movements and activities that are normally things done when awake.

I suffer both insomnia and parasomnia in addition to apnea when I do sleep. Often I end up having to take something to assist with falling asleep and then when I sleep i'm cycling between parasomnia events and apnea events that often don't get recorded because my mask is off or partially off or adjusted wrong.

I'm dealing with things as small as repeatedly removing or adjusting the mask (during sleep) to as big as waking up in the middle of physical activity and going back to bed to find the machine still running and mask disassembled.

This is on top of struggling to fall asleep and struggling with the feelings of suffocation while the mask is on and I'm awake.

we've tried lowering the pressure to minimize the feeling of suffocating but if we don't use the current pressure then family reports heavy snoring with the mask on and I've managed to fall asleep.

But the parasonmia is getting worse during the brief sleeping periods and family is reporting heavy snoring with the mask partially on, not secured properly when they check in on me.

Hi, Funktastic  I can't address parasomnia and will leave that to others.

Meanwhile, you mention feelings of suffocation with your current pressure.  EPR might help.  If you can download OSCAR and post screenshots, others here will be able to help you get to more comfortable and effective settings.  That could help with your insomnia and reduce your inclination to remove the mask.

Also, have you tried heat and humidification, which can also help to improve comfort?

Funktastic,

Have you thought of some type of travel CPAP with a battery. I am thinking along the lines of heart /blood pressure machines that are worn all the time, kind of set up. Not sure about full facemask

An OSCAR would be good to look for the sleep part. Do use ramp, your pressure says 15 is that all night?

Are there parasomnia online support groups you can check out.
