Apnea vs Obstructive? - bwexler - 09-27-2013

I am still trying to tell the difference between "Apnea" and "Obstructive Apnea" in Sleepyhead.

Can any of you who know so much more than I do, look at my info and help to explain the difference and the relevance?

My AHI of 13.48 looks terrible but when I look at the graphs that I still don't know how to post, I can see massive leaks over 40 or even over 50 during 2 periods last night. The first from 2:00 to 2:15 just before a potti break and the second from 5:00 to 6:00 for no apparent reason. The rest of the time my leaks were below 10.

The "Apnea" all happened at the times of high leaks.there were only a total of 4 OA events all during high leak.

The "Clear Airway" events were clustered before and after the high leak but non during the high leaks.

The only Hypopnea was just after 2:00 during high leak.

Snore went up during high leak but never got over 0.19.

Insp time went way up with the leaks but Exp time did not seem to change.

My bedroom got really cool last night for the first time in a while and the top sheet was not enough to keep me warm. I vaguely recall fighting with the blanket in the early AM, which may have contributed to the leaks.

RE: Apnea vs Obstructive? - STL Mark - 09-27-2013

Unspecified apnea occurs during high leak because the flow of air is not good enough to distinguish between the two types. When you eliminate your large leaks you will eliminate your unspecified apnea.

Thank you. That makes sense.

Now second part of the question, why did the many CA occur before and after the large leaks but not during the leaks.

During large leaks the machine not only cannot tell what kind of apnea you're having, it can't reliably tell you if you're having an apnea.

The data is rubbish during large leaks.

For CPAP therapy to be effective you must first and foremost get rid of the large leaks.

It's harder to control leaks with full face masks. Is a nasal mask an option for you?

Cinch down the straps on the mask.
