increased AHI - condohk69 - 11-18-2013

hi all,

i had my first sleep study back in 2006 with an AHI 0f 26.

i just got my results from my recent study & my AHI has blown out to 58.fortunately 8cm on the cpap is controlling this.

has anyone else had such a dramatic change in there numbers ?

what sort of thing can do this or does osa just worsen over time ? i also have cystic fibrosis & my lung function has dropped 50% in the last 2 years, could this be the cause ?

thanks in advance
jason

I haven't ever had a 2nd full sleep study; only the titration part.

I have to ask, were you treated after the first sleep study or did you use your machine faithfully after that sleep study?

have to admit i didn`t start using the machine until a month before my recent study but my sleep doctor was convinced there wouldn`t be much change

Yes. My first sleep study several years ago I had an AHI of a little over 5, barely sleep apnea. My more recent study (July-ish) had an AHI of about 30. In your case it would make a lot of sense to me that decreased lung function makes it worse, although I don't know for sure, did you ask your doctor?

RE: increased AHI - me50 - 11-18-2013

I would think (and I am no doctor) that since AHI's are not caused by what our lungs do or don't do (at least that is what I understood) that they would not affect AHI's unless they are decreased enough that you just don't breathe for a short while. I dunno. Just shooting in the dark here. I would agree that it is best to ask your doc who is more qualified to answer that question. Mucous building up in your lungs and blocking your airway might make your AHI's higher in the 2nd sleep study you had. DocWils or someone else will have better answers to your questions than I do.

Glad you are going to get treatment. It sure shouldn't hurt.

Usually sleep apnea gets worse as we get older or if we put on weight, obviously continuous treatment will help us by not cure us.
condohk69, your other illness's are not going to help things.

Yes, even with CPAP use, things change. We get older. We lose or gain weight. Changes in medication, health, etc.

thank you for all the replies they are most helpful.

my sleep DR is also my CF specialist & unfortunately it has become increasingly difficult to get in to see him & living a 4 hour drive away doesn`t help. i will be continuing with the cpap every night as i feel a difference with it & my wife notices a big difference in me.
