Why? - Lukie - 11-24-2013

I am trying to figure out why both my doctor and my DME kept pushing Philips Respironics on me when I was insisting upon a ResMed S 9 auto with climate line hose and Hi5 humidifier.
Since the machines are quite similar I am curious as to possible motives, like better profits or lack of familiarity which drove them to try to get me into a phillips.
When push came to shove, I got what I wanted and everyone seemed happy.
I have nothing against Phillips but I just liked what I heard about the S9 auto.

Lukie, in the end, it probably doesn't matter you got the CPAP you want and seem to be doing well with it. My sleep specialist is a 'Resmed man' and just wrote that on my script before I knew anything about the brands or models. Whether he is getting a bigger kick back from Resmed or has just had more success with Resmed's, I don't know.

Because!!!

Seriously, I think it was a lack of familiarity myself rather than a more sinister reason.

Hopefully, you can help give your doc a more open mind. Sleep-well

Well I'm very happy with my machine. I suppose it is similar to the old Mac vs PC argument. People just have their preferences and it is up to the consumer to get informed independently from the provider to find a good match for oneself.

True. But unfortunately when I went back to the very nice and knowledgeable RT, my data card would not work on her ResMed data program. So
I downloaded Sleepyhead for Mac and it worked quite well.

Me, too. They acted like I wanted a Bentley or Rolls Royce but my insurances paid 100 % . I am so happy with it. This is my first machine and I have slept 9 hours a night from the day I put it on. I have issues like everyone but it beats not having anything available for this curse.

Your lucky in that respect, in Australia we have to pay for nearly all of the machine and equipment ourselves which can be expensive but I would have paid 10 times the amount I did for a good nights sleep and to have a better quality of life than I have had most of my life

Many people in the US have to pay out of pocket for these things. Not all are as luck as I am to have access to good insurance.

It could be that Respironics products are slightly cheaper than Resmed. Since the machines all have the same code, by selling you are Respironics, they have a better profit margin. The DME has probably convinced the doctors that it is a better machine.
