What requires a prescription in the US? - justMongo - 12-05-2013

For financial reasons, I may have to take an holiday from seeing my sleep doc.

Can I buy hoses, masks, mask parts, water tanks, filters -- the expendable things associated with CPAP without his Rx in the US?

You need a prescription for a mask but not the other items if you order online. Get a copy of your old prescription if at all possible. The online suppliers do accept old prescriptions. If necessary, you can buy a mask assembly kit without a prescription. It's a mask without headgear, then order the headgear as a separate item.

Mask and machine. Not the filters, not the mask parts. You can purchase all the parts to make a mask but you need a prescription for the mask.

And any doctor can write the script, not just the sleep doc.

I had to give the DME a script that said all supplies. BUT, they had me get another script that specifically listed the climate line tubing. Here, some DME's say you need a script for a chin strap and others say you don't. I just know what I was told but with Apria, who knows?

The prescription let them charge your insurance.

As Paula said, the prescription for chin straps or heated tube is just for insurance purposes. The DME uses the Rx as documented evidence of medical necessity. If buying on-line and paying yourself, no Rx needed.

You might be able to get your script from your sleep doc, either your old one or a new one. I got one from my doc that says "mask, patient preference.
