Modifications to cpap mask - Diane Bart - 01-10-2014

I have a Quattro Air. I like it's light weight but do not like the headband. I am planning to cut the frame just above the nose and glue something on the mask or frame to hold head straps from a Quattro FX. Any ideas on what kind of glue I can use or better way to do it. All ideas appreciated. Thanks

I'd need pictures to really comment on possible methods.
Gluing this kind of plastic is difficult to get anything to last.
I've had some luck with JB Weld. Be sure to "rough up" any surface
you use it on with sandpaper. I doubt you will have acceptable results
with this project though. There is a plastic welder you can purchase that
works very well, however they are somewhat expensive.

Have you tried nasal masks or nasal pillows? they are really light weight without the kind of headgear you have with your ffm.

Instead of cutting the mask, I'd look into modifying the straps to fit the mask. Either taking the attachments from the one and affixing them to the other or something. That has to be easier and safer than cutting a mask.

That said, because of the tension needed to hold a mask on, Super Glue won't work. There's some better plastic epoxy that might but they can be messy. If you had an old mask to practice on first, that would be ideal.

And one last thing. Whatever you do, leave the vent ports alone. Don't move them, touch them, modify them, whatever them.

Welcome Diane, I use the Quattro Air and find it ok, are you going to try to cut the head rest? I think it would be need to stabilise the mask and prevent leaks into the eye area. Not sure that glueing other parts on would work but you could give it a try. Just make sure it doesn't increase leaks. Are you using any software to monitor your data? If not, I suggest you download Sleeyhead and have a look at your results now and when you have done the modifications.

Call me paranoid? As this is floating around your face for hours at a time, the type of glue used may cause possible issues that might be harmful? Ofcourse, I could also be off my rocker...but just sharing...

Personally, if you're not one for the ffm with a forehead piece, there are ones out there that don't have them. The Quattro FX and Hans Rudolph v2 are just a couple that have been discussed on the board recently and I'm sure there are others out there. May be easier in the long run to find one pre-made that works, rather than trying to modify one.
