Newly diagnosed, first night on resmed s9 autoset, question - bpreachers - 06-14-2014
First a brief intro. I am a US Navy vet that was medically retired October 2013 due to neck surgery complications. In 2011 I had a sleep study which the Navy stated was not bad enough to require intervention. Now that I am a civilian my new doctor said I needed to see a sleep specialist as I had many symptoms of OSA. Had two sleep studies, diagnosed with moderate osa, and now have a resmed s9 autoset as of yesterday so last night was my first night. I am confused on my results on its readouts.
It says used 8.5 hours (which is accurate), pressure was avg at 10.4, have the smiley face meaning the seal was good, but it shows a 57L/min leak rate which is double what it should be. So why is it showing I kept a good seal (the smiley face) but that my leak rate was so high?

WELCOME! to the forum.!
It was probably because you had a large leak for a short time but for most of the night, you didn't have any significant leaks. Hang in there for a better explanation.

According to ResMed, leaks was not significant enough to impact on the performance of the machine
Adjusting mask fit and leaving the machine on while getting up to pee during the night can inflate leak reading
57 L/m means leak was at or below 57 L/m for 95% of the night, you can download the software for more detailed info and graphs

Thanks. I was already used to sleeping with the tubing for an oxygen concentrator so the head gear was only a short step above that lol. Hardest part was actually falling asleep cause it is an odd feeling breathing when awake. First night i havent woken up, snored, choked, or talked in my sleep in many years.

After a few days of using it the leak number has dropped to 20 so I guess it was just because it was the first night so it is averaging lower. Planning on pulling the data in another day or so.

You don't say which FF Mask you're using.
My experience with my FF Mask, is that every time I change the cushion that seals to my face, it leaks a bit for a couple of nights.
Like it needs to mold to my face.

F&P Simplus Medium full face mask. Only bit about it I do not like is it feels like the mask needs to be a bit wider. One size up to Large was the same width. Basically the edges of my mouth almost hit the edge of the seal.

Had the same wide mouth problem plus FFM causing overheating and claustrophobia. Worked on sinus rinse regime and switched to P10 pillows - so much nicer.

In my limited experience the FFM mask sizes only relate to the distance from the crease between your chin and lower lip and the bridge of your nose. Unless it causes leaks, the proximity of the edge of your mouth to the seal should not be a problem. Of course, if it continues to bother you then it is a problem. I am not sure if different FFMs are wider but there are some other options. The Respironics FitLife "whole" face mask is much wider and extends all the way up to the forehead. The other options, if you can use them are nasal masks and nasal pillows. I can not use them but many others can.
