New Machine Choice - chuckinca - 07-25-2014

My dentist, who likes to reach out for other medical problems told me my tooth was OK. Then he added that I might have sleep apnea and gave me a sensor to put on my index finger with a wire going to a wrist watch looking recorder.

After wearing the sensor for two nites I returned to the dentist's office whereupon he told me I had awakened 32 times (a hour?) the first night and 28 times the second nite.

He advised me to get a ResMed S-9 Escape, Quattro mask and the heated humidifier.

I did. I don't notice that I sleep any better. BUT! I no longer need to take a nap after eating breakfast.

After that affirmation I will now go for a sleep study. I may end up with a ResMed S-9 Elite as that seems to furnish more information to the user.

Not good advice on both machine and mask choices
You want data capable machine, S9 AutoSet and S9 Elite are data capable machines, Escape models are not.

Before PAP, your AHI was 28, while on PAP we like to see AHI below 5, the Escape does not tells us AHI or leak rate, mask fit is most essential for effective therapy

S9 AutoSet cost some $40 more than S9 Elite but you get two machines in one, can be set on either fixed pressure or auto-PAP and both options report efficacy data

If you breathe through your nose, go with nasal pillows or nasal mask, I use nasal mask and chinstraps to helps keep mouth closed

No longer need take a nap is a good start, welcome to the forum and best of luck

Hi chuckinca,
WELCOME! to the forum.!
I would get a data-capable machine, such as, the S9 Elite or better yet, the S9 AutoSet.
Sometimes you don't notice inprovement right away, it takes time but, it sounds like if you aren't taking a nap after breakfast, you are seeing slight improvement.
Hang in there for more responses to your post and good luck at your sleep study.

Welcome chuckinca. I think you already knew the machine issues with data, and the nasal pillow thing is the bomb if you can keep the old mouth shut.

I assume there was more info given to the dentist but I like the idea he is was on the ball and helping out where he could. The sensor thing sounds like more than just an oxygen sensor given he could tell you those figures. I think we all could have used one of those in our past.

So work on the study and keep up the good fight.

Good luck. I hope you don't end up paying for both the Escape and a good CPAP machine.

There are some links in my signature line to help you avoid being screwed in the process. There are a lot of snakes in the process waiting to prey on the newbies.

Welcome chuckinca and best wishes for success in apnea therapy. My experience is limited to a ResMed S9 Autoset but I can tell you I couldn't be happier with the device. I did change masks a few times but the S9 has been problem free. I absolutely depend on the data capable feature coupled with Sleepyhead and/or ResScan to monitor the effectiveness of my therapy.
