Chin strap ideas again - PaulaO2 - 08-21-2014

What chin straps do folks use for flapping lips? My mouth stays shut, but my cheeks are puffing out and air escapes between my lips.

No, I will not consider taping. Besides it being a dangerous practice, I am allergic/sensitive to adhesives.

I am currently using the "Ruby-like" chin strap from Supplier 1 (it's their own brand) and have always disliked it. I've had enough of the dang thing. For other reasons (read this) I can't wear it right now anyway so will be going without or using a simple strap or something for a while.

So again, it's not that I need one to necessarily keep my mouth closed (I've never been a mouth breather at night, I never snored with my mouth open), just one to help keep my lips closed. The "Ruby-like" did that but I am tired of the cost.

People I know with the same issue say hypo-allergenic medical grade tape works wonders.

[link to PapCap Chinstrap removed] has been working really well.

The PapCap looks interesting. I like that it is cloth instead of neoprene or latex. The price is a little steep though.

Due to my Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, any tape, no matter the grade, takes layers of skin when removed. Then, swelling, markings, and blisters follows. Usually, the tape causes a bigger issue than the wound it covered. The more sensitive skin areas, such as my face, forearms, abdomen, etc, are the most effected.

I have two small round band-aids on my face today and I dread removing them. Instead, I will leave them on until they either fall off or I rinse them off in the shower. That will lessen the damage slightly.

So as you can see, and as I said earlier, I am not interested in the least in the concept of taping my lips. Nor am I interested in using denture paste. I am rather fond of my ugly face and have no intention of purposely making it uglier. Except maybe by drinking lemonade and getting all pucker-face from that.

Hmm. What about a mild, natural adhesive product applied to the lips, like guar gum?

Paula, I did not like the Ruby chinstrap for many of the reasons you cite. I am doing better with the Pursom Pro however. It still has a cup with a seam in it which I don't understand why that's necessary, but the thing is much lighter and cooler.

RE: Chin strap ideas again - PaulaO2 - 08-21-2014

Yes, I looked at that one and saw the seam. There are better places to put it rather than the place that holds the most tension against the skin!

Did the original Ruby have the seam, too? Or just the Supplier #1 version?

RE: Chin strap ideas again - retired_guy - 08-21-2014

I don't know. But I do think I'm going to put Mrs. RG on the case to see if she can create a chinstrap with a cup without a seam.

I use the ResMed Sullivan (Supplier #1, Item #16015). I have tried lots of different ones and have found that adjusting them is critical. They have to be tight enough or they don't work.

In my opinion the leak is not at the lips, that is just the location where you see evidence of the leak. The leak itself is at the top of the back of the tongue.
