Well! Now I KNOW why I am SO sleepy! AHI is 44! - Evpraxia - 09-07-2014

Well, THIS explains why I get SO sleepy!

Recap (from a phone call) of sleep study:: Apnea events started with 5 per hour, than went to 9 and topped out at 44 while sleeping on my back. 44 times of stopping breathing in one hour!! NOT good!

Oxygen level was usually around 95%, dropped to 82% while sleeping on my back. YIKES!!

Bring on the CPAP/APAP!!! I should get mine this week (I pray and hope!!), in the meantime I am using my hubby's old CPAP, known as "the brick", until than. I have been having my hubby adjust it up from 8.0 to 8.2 and last night I went to 8.6.

The full review of the sleep study is on Sept 22nd and I will get the written report at that time. I will know the pressure range when I get my CPAP.

I refuse to give myself brain & heart damage as my father did. [/font]

Congrats on finding out the prob. My wife told me 18 years ago as newlyweds that she was afraid that she would be a young widow because I stop breathing during the night. Finally got my machine last week! My father in law died in 2012 in his sleep from what we believe was health issues that were complicated from SA. Good luck on getting everything setup!

Ok! Good job starting with the therapy. Until you get this thing mastered, try to avoid sleeping on your back. One of my greatest joys of all this has been my ability to begin sleeping on my back again after years of not able to do that, so I'm not an advocate of "permanently" giving up back sleeping, just temporarily until this gets sorted out. ...and with your super attitude I'm sure that will be very soon.

Best of luck to you. I wish I had been diagnosed years ago.

I am sorry to hear about your father-in-law; it is hard.

Thanks for wishing me luck - so far things are improving even with using "the brick". Can hardly wait for my new CPAP!

Hi there retired_guy! Thanks for all the support you have given me and others.

How did you manage to NOT sleep on your back? Just curious. We tried cut-in-half tennis balls with my father (sewed them onto his PJs) and that didn't work at all; so I am a bit leery of trying that for me as I wear loose tee shirts as my PJs.

Thank you, Galactus;

I also wish I had been diagnosed years ago.

Thankfully, the word about how important sleep is seems to be getting better known; and with that, how serious sleep apnea is.

Hi Evpraxia, welcome to the forum!

Please thoroughly read and understand machine recommendations, here:

Ask about anything which is unclear.

Take care,

Thank you SO much for the info! turns out my hubby's new machine is on the Recommend list. Since we have the same sleep specialist I hope/think I will get the same machine.

Do NOT accept a brick! If they try to give you a brick, refuse it and ask for one of the recommended machines. Sorry if I over-reacted, but hoping and thinking is great - but more important is making sure that you get what you need.
