Apnea Acronyms - PaulaO2 - 04-12-2012 I am putting together a list of acronyms related to sleep apnea. Updates are immediately after the list. Kinda sorta alphabetic order: A-Flex - Respironic's name for exhalation pressure relief for APAP AHI - apnea-hypopnea index; also seen as A/HI AI - apnea index APAP - automatic positive airway pressure (also called AutoPAP) Bi-Flex - Respironic's name for exhalation pressure relief for BiPAP BiPAP - bi-level machine made by Respironics BPAP - bilevel positive airway pressure; not to be confused with BiPAP BPM - beats or breaths per minute C-Flex - Respironic's name for exhalation pressure relief for CPAP cm / cm H2O - centimeters / measurement used by xPAP machines; centimeter of water CO2 - carbon dioxide (not to be confused with carbon monoxide) COPD - chronic obstructive pulmonary disease CPAP - continuous positive airway pressure CSA - central sleep apnea DME - durable medical equipment; distributer of durable medical equipment (durable means non-disposable like xPAP machines) EDS - excessive daytime sleepiness; somnolence EEG - Electroencephalography (brain waves) EMG - Electromyogram (muscle movement) EPAP - exhale positive airway pressure EPR - exhale pressure relief (trade name by ResMed) FF - full face mask HI - hypopnea index HME - home durable medical equipment; same as DME IPAP - inhale positive airway pressure N-CPAP - nasal continuous airway pressure O2 - oxygen OSA - obstructive sleep apnea PAP - positive airway pressure PLMD - periodic limb movement disorder (body twitches during sleep, usually as the brain tries to wake you up to breathe) PLM - periodic limb movement (used on sleep reports with a number for how many occurred; part of the "arousal index") PSG - Polysomnography (sleep test) RDI - respiratory disturbance index (same as AHI) REM - rapid eye movement (dream state of sleep) RLS - restless leg syndrome (twitchy legs during the day, often preventing sleep) RT - resiratory therapist SA - sleep apnea UPPP - Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty; also known as UP3 VPAP - variable positive airway pressure xPAP - any of the positive air pressure machines UPDATES: RRT - registered respiratory technician RPSGT - registered polysomnography technician AASM - American Academy of Sleep Medicine ABSM - American Board of Sleep Medicine ADSM - Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine APSS - Associated Professional Sleep Societies (part of AASM) ASAA - American Sleep Apnea Association MSLT - Multiple Sleep Latency Test NCSDR - National Center for Sleep Disorder Research (part of NIH) NSF- National Sleep Foundation PLMI = Periodioc Limb Movement Index SSS - Stanford Sleepiness Scale NIH - National Institute of Health misc acronyms associated with sleepyhead software: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/sleepyhead/index.php?title=Sleep_Disorder_Glossary Long list of technical terms http://www.respironics.com/Glossary.asp This compilation will go in the wiki and will have links to the appropriate page (if one exists). The only new one I have is N-CPAP - nasal continuous airway pressure I guess that is that Provent or whatever it is called. It did not include the word "disorder", but referred instead to the actual number of periodic limb/leg movements. It was used in the creation of an "arousal index". |
