Nose pillows and hose/tubing position/management - Evpraxia - 09-26-2014
Hi all,
I have been using my ResMed S9 AutoSet w/ResMed Swift LT for Her - Nasal Pillows System for almost a week (just got the equipment on Sept 20th).
I started using the swivel catch/holder thing on the headgear for the hose/tubing to go through and did have some small leaks. On Monday my sleep specialist told me to use a clip that attaches to the hose/tubing and clip it to my PJ top and NOT to put the hose over the head.
SO, I have been doing that since Monday night and the leaks have gotten worse and the insides of my nasal cavities, where the nasal pillows rest, has gotten sore.
I plan on going back to the over-the-head hose position for tonight and use some of the tips I have found on this board.
Any one else having difficulties with hose management? What has worked for you?

Yes, I'm using the same system and have some problems as well. The good thing is that I love the pillows compared to the P10, which made my nostrils very sore. I'm a slender, average-sized woman and use extra small pillows. What works well for the leaks was placing the pillows AFTER the machine is turned on and blowing. That plumps up the pillows so they fit nicely. I did try just the small pillows at one point, but they were too big, so extra small it is.
Now as to the hose, the swiveling is aggravating. Every time I turn over I have to wake up enough to keep it from draping across my face. And the venting, I have to say, is despicable. Cold, icy air blowing on me or my hubby. If anything is too close to the vent (like bedding, pillow or a hand), it makes a racket and wakes us both up. He's on an APAP, with P10's which he is struggling with (headgear issues, can't adjust properly). I love the headgear and pillows on my Swift FX, but the swiveling and venting is tiresome.
I'm like you, would love to hear any solutions to this, since the system is half-way perfect.

Hi Evpraxia,
The CPAP suppliers have a hose lift system that has a square stand that slides under your mattress with a pole attached to it which lifts the hose up and out of your way. I know that some people here have made their's out of various hooks and such.
Check with the suppliers list at the top of each page on this board and you'll be able to see picts of what I'm talking about so it will make more sense to you.
Good luck and hang in there for more suggestions.

Can't speak to the Swift but anything that puts (side) pressure on the pillows will tend to cause movement and movement leads to nasal irritation.
It is very similar to shoes, shows that chafe (rub, move) will rub blisters.
With the P10, the extra flexible pigtail hose and LACK of a swivel means there isn't much to cause leverage unless a pillow or blanket puts direct pressure on the hose near the mask.
For me, it's pretty easy to allow the hose to go straight down my body to about the diaphragm or belly button -- it runs from there below my ribs when I am facing away from the machine.
This took a few days to a couple of weeks to learn to do, but it really wasn't hard to learn to prevent pressure on the hose and manage it straight away from my face.

I sheepishly admit what the real problem was...I apparently have a hard figuring out which way is up on the nasal pillows. My hubby figured it out in about 2 seconds last night - even without his glasses on! I feel like a penny waiting for change.
Now I need to implant Firmly in my brain that the nasal pillows point UP towards the cheek stabilizers of the head gear.
Last night I had hardly ANY mask/nasal pillow leaks!

Truly amazing the results that can be achieved when one just follows the directions. You should have seen me following the directions on the lanolin box, my nose is still sore and I have no idea why..... note; you'll only get this if you had a bottle of that lanolin with the directions on it

Hey, I have turned my pillows wrong way around -- even gotten good therapy that way. (But don't tell anyone else about this it was pretty silly.

When you turn the pillows the wrong way around did you have to turn your nose around to match?
