Q: Is the ResMed VPAP ST an 'Auto-adjusting' machine??? - dubli - 10-12-2014

Hello Smile

I am a newbie to CPAP

Wondering if the 'ResMed VPAP ST' an 'Auto-adjusting' machine???

Thanks in advance

Thanks

No. It's a BiPAP that operates at two fixed pressures (IPAP and EPAP)
The ST has a fallback timed rate to cycle it into IPAP.

Thank you Mongo!

You said "The ST has a fallback timed rate to cycle it into IPAP."

...what is a fallback timed rate? and what is an IPAP?

also, do you think i should upgrade to a VPAP auto? I noticed you have one, Mongo.
Do you think VPAP auto is considerably better than VPAP ST, for yourself?

Mongo, How do you like your VPAP auto?

Thanks Smile

I'm sure you can check the wiki or manufactures pages to find out the difference. I think the V(variable?)PAP machines have a separate setting for Inhalation pressure and Exhalation pressure which is what he is referring to. The fallback must be if you have not started the next inhale or exhale it will time out and switch over itself?
There will be more scientific explanation somewhere, just getting the ball rolling in my folksy kinda way.

VPAP is ReMed's proprietary word for BiLevel.
@dubli: you can find definitions for some of these terms in the Wiki.
IPAP is the inhalation pressure; EPAP is the exhalation pressure; and PS (Pressure Support) is the difference between the two pressures.
The VPAP Auto can run in CPAP mode or S mode or Auto mode; but not ST mode.
The VPAP auto holds a fixed relationship of IPAP=EPAP+PS
One sets a min EPAP pressure and a max IPAP pressure; and it will auto adjust pressure within the set limits.

Which machine is best for you depends upon what type of apnea you have.
Most people have a sleep study done and get a prescription for a type of machine and pressures.
In some other countries, the patient is sort of on their own to figure things out.

The most useful machines are fully data capable. Some are what we call dumb bricks because they offer little or no data to look at.

The most popular machine that I see on this forum is the ResMed S9 Autoset.

Thank you! That was really helpful Smile

Mongo - When a VPAP Auto runs on 'Auto mode' - can it do bilevel auto, or cpap auto, or a mixture of both?

Will look up the wiki pages for more info.

Thanks
Kind regards

Mongo and I both use the S9 VPAP Auto. It does bilevel auto but can be made to act like a one level auto. It will also do S mode which is bilevel, non-auto or it can do straight unilevel, non-auto. It is capable of just about any mode except timed backup or servo ventilator mode.

best Regards,

PaytonA

A bilevel machine switches between a high pressure (IPAP) for inhale and a lower pressure (EPAP) for exhale.

In S mode, the machine is in "Spontaneous" mode. It detects when you change from inhale to exhale.

In T mode, the machine is in "Timed" mode. It decides when to go from inhale pressure to exhale pressure.

In ST mode, the machine operates in S mode unless you stop breathing and then it switches to a form of T mode. This is a way to treat central apnea.

I believe the VPAP ST machine will do all three modes. It does not do auto adjusting.

The VPAP auto does NOT do T mode or ST mode. If you need T mode or ST mode for central apnea, it won't do it. The VPAP auto is not "superior" to the ST, or vice versa. Either one does things the other one doesn't

If you have central apnea, the VPAP Adapt does ASV mode, which is sort of a super ST mode.
