System One Heated Humidifier/Heated Hose not working - kfujioka - 02-13-2015

My System One Heated hose suddenly stopped warming up well. (It still warms up but only a little even though I have it at the highest setting, 5.)
I had a Respiratory Specialist from my home health company come today and he said the heated hose is working and the humidifier is working. The settings are also correct, he said.
What I experience when I go to bed is that the hose warms up slightly when i start the machine but within 10 minutes or so, i no longer feel the hose to be warm. However when I first got the humidifier and heated hose, it was very warm to the touch when i had it cranked up to 5.

Has anyone else had this problem? I really need the hose to work because I get sinus issues if I don't have humidity. My sleep doctor told me the heated hose is very important since it keeps the warm moist air in the tube so it reaches my nose.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Snugglehose cover on mine. Softens it to the touch and it keeps the air warmer. I know some people have concerns about covering these, but I have done it since 2008 (originally with a Sleepzone hose) with no problems, warmer temps and more comfort.

Hi Kimberly, the heated hose warms the air for your comfort and also helps prevent condensation in the tube (rainout). If the technician has checked out the hose and humidifier and they're both working OK, then it may be a question of perception. The hose will only ever be a few degrees above ambient, so if the weather is hotter than usual, the hose may be at the correct temperature, but it won't feel warm. Could that be an explanation?

kfujioka,
The heated hose doesn't always feel warm to the touch. If the heated hose was not working, you would be breathing in colder air. Your System One humidifier also has the option of preheating the water. You can do this 30 minutes prior to going to bed. I also use a snugglehose hose cover.

The PRS1 heated hose setttings run from 4 degrees above ambient temperature at the lowest setting to 16 degrees above ambient temperature at its highest.

Mine has never felt warm to the touch though a setting of 4 even on a cold night with bedroom temp in the low sixties feels like being in the tropics.

I have to switch humidy modes to the System one mode and turn off the heated hose in summer. It too hot even set on 1. But its never ever been warm to the touch.

Edited to add that you might check your leak rate. If you have a high vent rate mask and a leak bordering on large leak the airflow thru the machine and up the tube will be moving to fast for the tube or the humidifier to heat it up much if at all.

I had a similar experience when I started using my P10 nasal pillow mask with my PRS1 60 series auto. I use the system one heated humidifier at 2 setting and heated tube at 2 setting. I also preheat the humidifier 20-30 minutes prior to starting the machine.

First night, it felt as if the nasal pillows were "overheating". But the feeling went away after 15 minutes.

After 3 weeks of P10, the nasal pillows don't feel like they heat up at all. I do feel a bit of humidity but that normalizes in 5 minutes tops.

Most likely, you have gotten used to the machine and humidifier and your nose is no longer surprised by the air's humidity and temp.

I got better results turning off System One humidity control, and going to manual. I have the humidity setting at 2, and the hose at 3, but this time of hear, the manual setting is at 4. Plenty of warmth and humidity.

As long as the hose temperature is not higher than your skin temperature, it will not feel warm. The hose temperature is controlled at the inside of the hose ( I think that holds true for P-R as well as Resmed. If not someone please correct me) and the hose is not a great thermal conductor. With the air flowing through it, the air can be warmer than the outside of the hose.

I think your hose is working OK now. I think there was something weird going on at the beginning (maybe aliens).

Yep, If your thinking the hose will be hot it's not, you wouldn't know it working by feel only.
I run mine on auto with great results are far as a snuggle buddy I guess I'm it, the hose is under the covers with me. Smile
