Mask Problem - weeble - 03-13-2015
Hi..firstly, let me say sorry for not being around for the past year and a half but I've been quite sick and really not on the internet a lot. Still not 100% but getting better :grin:
I've got a small problem. I've been on cpap now for 4 years or so and use a nasal mask. Suddenly - for no reason whatsoever, I'm now becoming allergic to the mask...I'm getting blotchy and dry skin around the area of where the mask sits. No change in mask type. Any ideas? Would you think perhaps a full face mask trial? I'm at a loss as to why this is suddenly happening

Sorry to hear that you've been sick, but glad you are on the mend.
Sometimes we suddenly become allergic to something that never bothered us before.
You could see a dermatologist. In the meantime, try mask liners. If that doesn't work, you might want to try a different mask, like a nasal pillow mask. This would have the least contact with you face.

I would try the mask liners. Any change in soaps or hygiene routine? If it worsens or doesn't improve I'd follow up with the doc.

Nope, no change in routine or soaps! However, I've just purchased some mask liners online (never knew you could get them) Thanks OpalRose and truetopath for the suggestion. If they don't work, I will talk to the doc. Oh an OpalRose, I can't use pillows - long story but they are a no go for me.

Great to hear from you again.
Hopefully, the liners work for you. If you find that they don't, you might look into the cloth masks by Sercadiance called the SleepWeaver.
I'm sorry to hear that you have been ill for quite a while but,Good to hear you are getting better.
Much success to you as you continue and fine tune your CPAP therapy, good luck with solving your mask problem.

I sure hope the liners work for you, because I know that would be an easier, much less expensive solution.

Mask liners can be made at home, if you are so inclined and have enough energy. Old t-shirts work well. Use the new mask liners as the pattern (template), cut the old t-shirts and use.
To help stop the skin irritation I find that beeswax products work well; the lip balm made by Burt's Bees works for me. I tried lanolin and that did not work for me at all. Your experience may differ.

Funnily enough, I was received my mask liners today and was looking at them thinking surely they can be made at home because they are a waste of money really. I paid over $40 australian and they can only be used once so $40+ each and every month is an awful lot, particularly when on a pension. So yes, I will be looking at making my own
