sinus problems - sidetwists - 05-05-2015

I am hoping for some advice.

I've been using my machine every night for a couple of years now and at first it made a world of difference to me. Of late the effect has diminished though, partly due to the fact that I seem to have breathing problems due to blocked sinuses once I've had it on for an hour or so. Not a runny nose or anything, just completely blocked sinuses and unable to nose breathe which then wakes me up of course.

Has anyone experienced similar problems and/or know a way to address this?

I've been to my GP who said he can't see anything wrong with my sinuses and said I should just use some nasal spray like Vicks, but I am very reluctant to make myself dependent on that stuff.

Would it damage the humidifier or climate line if I added some eucalypt oil or the like to the water?

Any advice appreciated Smile

Have you ever considered nasal pillows? I can breath through a cold or sinus infection with no problem. The nasal pillows seem to inflate the sinuses and relieve any perception of restriction. This may be a temporary problem related to allergy.

The consensus is: Don't add anything to the water in the tank.

The best advice I can give you is to see and ENT specialist, who can look into your sinus cavities to the extent that it feels like the probe should be coming out the back of your head.

Hi sidetwists,
WELCOME! to the forum.!
I wouldn't add anything to the water in the humidifier, as oils can gum things up after a while and then your humidifier won't work as well.
Have you tried things like sinus rinses before bedtime, such as the nati, (spelling,) pot or the neomed sinus rinse?
Hang in there for more suggestions and much success to you as you continue your CPAP therapy and getting your sinus problems straightened out.

Are you using climateline tubing or the standard tubing? I would suggest that you try adjusting the humidity from the machine first. Either more or less humidity might help. I would suggest trying more humidity first. It might take a fair amount more humidity (I do not know where your humidity is set now). I would try more and if that does not work try even more the next time.

A nasal rinse with something like a Nettipot before bed may help.

I have had the problem that you describe and I managed to get it resolved with saline nasal spray sometimes and regular nasal spray at other times. The problem apparently resolved itself after a while and I have not encountered it again. May be from pollen type allergy?

I am a firm believer in the Climateline tubing. I set mine to automatic and once I found the sweet spot it was just set it and forget it.

Best Regards,

PaytonA

I'm no expert, but I agree with the above. My nasal pillows inflate my always swollen sinuses so that I breathe better at night than I do during the day. (It also helps that the sinuses drain a bit, laying flat on my back.) If you can stand nasal pillows (I can't stand any of the alternatives!) they help with sinus congestion. For me, at least.

I will make yet another plug for Xclear nasal spray... you won't become dependent on it, it will do a gentle cleaning, and moistening of the nasal passages making the membranes slick and inhospitable to crud.

I tried the pillows when I first had my sleep clinics to find out how bad my apnea really was and I had difficulties with them then, but maybe these things have improved, its over three years since those clinics Smile

Thanks, I take that on board, hadn't thought of the effect of the oils in the tubing etc...

Yes I'm using the climateline as well and I love the fact that it warms up the air a bit. Hadn't thought of playing with the humidity level, its on the agenda for tonight now Smile

And THAT I'm going to look into as well, I hope I can get a similar product here...

Thanks everyone, I'm glad for all suggestions!

I'd like to toss in another endorsement for nasal pillows. I have no problems with stuffiness, even during allergy season. I up the humidity if my sinuses are getting clogged, and that thins out the mucus and lets the cpap keep things clear.
