Link for Zonk - PaytonA - 06-16-2015

I am posting this to post a link for Zonk since I can't seem to find my way back to the thread where it came up. The question had to do with the calculation of unintentional leak rate calculation for Resmed machines.
The link is http://www.apneaboard.com/forums/Thread-A-note-on-unintentional-leak-determination-and-mask-type?pid=92799#pid92799

Leak: An estimate of the total flow of air escaping due to mouth and mask leaks. It is derived by analyzing the inspiratory and expiratory airflows, together with the expected mask vent flows. High or changing leak rates may affect the accuracy of other measurements.

This is something did not understood back then and still not any wiser, hence my replay post #2
Ignorance is a bliss

I prefer things explained in a simple way so my simple mind can understand, something like:

Total leak = unintentional leak + intentional leak
Unintentional leak = total leak - intentional leak

[Image: Tea-Pot.jpg] or if you prefer Coffee

BTW, this is not OT, rather mainstream, bread and butter stuff

Thanks for finding that for me but that particular thread had a lot of information that did not quite hit the mark.

Zonk, I don't think the second link is the one you intended or maybe I am just not seeing the connection

Actually other measurements may affect the leak rate. If you look closely at the short spikes in your leak rate and look at the flow rate for the exact same time many of the leak spikes will have a corresponding flow rate spike.

The statement, "It is derived by analyzing the inspiratory and expiratory airflows, together with the expected mask vent flows." seems bogus to me. If you use the expected vent rate and the actual flow rate (measured) that would be all of the data you would need to do a quick subtraction to calculate the leak rate. You would not need inspiratory and expiratory airflows.

Your equations are straightforward. The machine has a very accurate flow measurement. Now if there was a very accurate measure of the intentional leak, we would get a very accurate unintentional leak rate but that is not the case.

The "Leak" info comes from "ResScan Report Interpretation Guide"
The link to the guide posted in post #2, in ResScan thread

There lies the connection

Payton, You probably already know this but you can find a link of your posts in your profile page.

http://www.apneaboard.com/forums/User-PaytonA

This lists all the posts you made:

If you already knew that then maybe it will help someone else. I've used it a lot since my memory stinks.
