new b here.. strange apnea attack experinces - icarus - 06-18-2015

hi all iam a newb to this forum...I am 45 years of male 102 kg heavy snorer and I get apnea attacks though limited to once or twice a week..though the problem is not severe its the manner in which these attacks happen that intrigues me..I have been reading that sleeping on back caused Mount muscles to relax and block the nasal passages leading to oxygen deprivation..
however my case is exactly opposite..I will try to summarise pointwise below for better understanding

1) I sleep on my chest , and these attack occurs only when my right cheek is touching the pillow...in other words if I don't remember a incident sleeping on my left cheek and suffering apnea...there is slight paying on my muscle on right side of neck giving me strong suspicion that it is due to stress on these muscle that is the cause.

2) however the most funny and at the same time fact is I get these attacks specially more when there us a pressure on my back caused by my wife putting her heavy legs:-) on my back in sleep or even sometimes her hand..is it possible that apnea is triggered by this weight ? I rememeber once when my kid was small ,and when I was asleep one day as usual on my chest, she sat on my back playing.and apnea attack occurred...

3) and the most disturbing aspect is the feeling I undergo under attack, first complete paralysis, followed by dream in which I shout scream to my wife please remove your leg or just shake me up awake I cannot breathe..

4) this is accompanied by a struggle to keep my neck from sinking and pain in right neck which I mentioned before..and that unmistakable feeling of 'this is the end, I am going to die' followed by continus struggle to wake up from paralysis

so these are my experiences with apnea so far which I felt first I believe when I was 16 17 tears young , back then when I used to sleep on my back it was just a tingling sensation in my spine area, no breathlessness, and short duration paralysis

please advise I am really suffering from apnea which seems to be occurring only when weight on my back in sleep or is it something else

also the dream sequences I mentioned afore s that common, what about pain in neck following apnea

thanks

Have you done a sleep study? Chances are you are experiencing many more apnea events than just the ones that wake you up. I had 37 events per hour and did not wake up to consciousness for any of them.

Too complex to answer. I suspect something else is going on.

You need a full lab sleep study to find out if you have apnea and/or any other sleep disorder.

The feeling of paralysis may be explained by waking up in middle of REM sleep. But there could be other explanations for this. I recommend you see your doctor or a sleep specialist doctor to pursue this diagnosis.

thank u all for prompt reply, not sure about undergoing sleep studies as the instances of apnea are low may b twice a month , with increase as winter season starts (may b due to cough)
feel its due to.my sleeping posture resulting in right neck muscle stress and consequrnt apnea
but then why triggered by weight on my back, thats something i am not able to.find info.on, never read any such occurances in apnea info...
btw anyone here going thru same dream sequence of screaming for help to shake your bodies during apnea

What you are referring to as 'apnea' is NOT apnea. It may be a manifestation of an effect of apnea.

If you do have sleep apnea, it doesn't show up twice a year. It is with you pretty much 100% of the time that you are asleep.

In your case, you may or may not have apnea. You may have some other sleep disorder. The only way to figure it out is a sleep study.

One pillow, two pillows, no pillows, bed partner laying on top of you, soft mattress, firm mattress, one blanket, two blankets, sheet and three blankets all wrapped tightly around your neck... or more important things like where that 102kg is situated: chest, legs, abdomen, or is some internal mass pressing against organs...

See a doctor ... you are also describing symptoms that killed my brother (he thought is was heartburn).

I'm not sure if I'm having apnea when it happens, but yes, I have had many dreams, usually right when falling asleep, where I still feel awake, but cannot move my body. I try to scream for hubby to wake me, but cannot scream as much as I try. Then suddenly I wake up. Weird and frightening at times.
