Not true. Many people have very hard water, or water that they don't trust to drink. In both cases, and for different reasons that have been already discussed at length, they need distilled or purified water.

RE: Humidifier Water
for years i used tap water, however two respiratory techs recently told me the reason distilled water should be used is because we don't know what is in our tap water. they further went on to explain there have been no 'good' studies showing the effects the minerals, heavy metals, etc. have on our nasal passages and lungs.
so i promised to use distilled water... though, in a pinch i will use tap..

vinegar and water will get rid of any icky deposits.
